Izzy couldn't sleep that night. She was too upset about Eddie deserting her for the front line. Why would he risk his life for a war that was pointless? In the end, out of frustration, she went into the common room and just sat there for a couple of hours. She went over everything that had happened in her mind. And after she brewed over what was to happen next, she realised she didn't feel sad.
She just felt angry.
What was Eddie thinking? Leaving her to go and kill innocent people and risk his own life for what? Glory? Favour from the Gods? Because, she thought, full of rage, at this rate, he wasn't going to be alive to earn favour from the Gods. She heard familiar footsteps come down the stairs from the boys dorms.
Eddie.
Composing herself, Izzy stood up. Eddie came down the stairs, his bags packed ready for the front line.
"Going without saying goodbye, are we?" Izzy surprised herself at how steady her voice was.
"Izzy I..." Eddie began but Izzy cut him off.
"Shut it. I don't want to hear any excuses."
"I'm sorry." Eddie looked at his feet sheepishly. "I should have told you my plans."
He was trying to win her back. Izzy wasn't having any of it.
"You think?" Izzy glared. "I mean, it would have been nice if you had told the person who loves you that you were going to get yourself killed."
Eddie walked towards her and, wrapping his arms around her waist, gave her the longest and most passionate kiss they had ever exchanged. Despite her anger and hurt, Izzy couldn't help melting in his arms.
"I have to do this Izzy. I love you, but right now I'm needed out there. In those fields and farms and streets where the fighting is taking place. That's where I'm needed." Eddie told her.
"But I need you here" Izzy said, and she felt hot tears stream down her face. Eddie hugged her again and kissed her cheek.
"Duty Calls darling. Forgive me." Eddie looked up at the clock. Eddie turned to walk away.
"Come back okay Eddie. Maybe if you come back I could forgive you and we can go out again."
"I will Izz, I will."
He didn't turn back.
And it was at that moment Izzy realised.
He loved the front line more than her.
And, strangely enough, Izzy wasn't angry. Or sad.
She felt hollow.Izzy retreated up to her dorm. She sat on her bed, not sure what to do.
That's when her eyes fell to a box on the floor. Hair dye that she had bought ages ago. A sort of red-brown colour. She was going to dye her hair a while back but persuaded herself not to, in case it looked bad and made her a laughing stock. But right now, she didn't care what anyone thought, if anyone laughed they were gonna get fucked up. She wasn't taking any more bullshit.Within a couple of hours she had dyed her hair.
Izzy looked in the mirror and gasped. Gone was the Blonde Princess, as her dad had called her. Now she was a redhead.
A Red Queen.Izzy walked out of her dorm in all her goth glory. Gone were the Doc Martens that Eddie had loved so much. Gone were the cute frilly socks. This was the new Izzy.
Everybody stared as she walked out of the Ianite Dorms. Dragon egg in her hands she went to the forest outside the school to hatch her Dragon.
She came across a clearing in the woods. She collected some dry wood and made a fire. She then carefully placed the Dragon Egg in the centre of the fire, and set the wood alight. The Dragon Egg started glowing, and then shaking. Izzy watched, excited and nervous about what type of Dragon it would be. The egg cracked open. An blue head poked out, hissing and coughing up sparks. Delighted, Izzy grabbed a fish from her bag and held it out to the dragon. The dragon ate it up out of her hands. Now for the dangerous part.
Izzy smothered her hands in fish oil, something that would attract the dragon to her. Once the dragon had noticed her, she would have to hold out her hands, whilst hoping the dragon wouldn't bite them off. Then she'd have to find the weak spot before her hands were gone. The weak spot would calm the dragon enough for her to do the last part; the ritual.
Why was taming baby dragons so complicated? The first part went fine. During the second part though, Izzy only just managed to avoid losing her hand. She winced at the deep cut on the back of her hand that the dragon had made. Now for the ritual. She made another cut, this time on her palm, and squeezed it so the blood flowed out. She held out her wounded hand and looked away, waiting for either the dragon to place its head there, or eat her hand.
Luckily it put its head there instead.
Izzy slowly looked up at her newly tamed Dragon. It licked her face enthusiastically, probably taking off half her make up with it. Izzy laughed and hugged her new pet.Izzy took the Dragon up to the Dorms, earning even more stares. She sat it down on her bed and told it to stay. It looked up at her with big, brown eyes. Eyes that seemed familiar.
Eyes like the guy who deserted her.
Izzy looked at her Dragon sadly. It needed a name...Competition time! Suggest a name for my Dragon in the comments and I'll pick out my favourite!
