Chapter Fourteen Adieu
"And her flower preferences?"
William groaned in exasperation for the umpteenth time. How many different questions could the woman come up with! "In case you haven't heard, I do have somewhere to be." He mumbled as he threw on a random shirt from the closet.
"Oh but William, it's so wonderful! Finally you have a decent relationship Wait. Is she a criminal?"
"I'll become a criminal if you don't be quiet." He muttered.
"I heard that."
"You were supposed to." He replied, chugging down the caffeine filled bitterness he had just poured.
"Come on, that's my last question, I promise!"
William threw his head back with a drawn out sigh. "I don't know, I never asked her," he admitted.
"Why on earth-"
"Now wait a second. You promised," He chuckled. "Your daughters room is next door, to the right not the left mind you. I'm sure you'll be much happier there."
"But William-"
"Goodbye Mother." He got out just before he closed the door.
With a contented sigh of happiness at the absence of his mother William began walking down the stairs, only to stop abruptly when he looked down at his bare feet.
"Condamner" He growled before whirling around to retrieve his beloved sneakers.
Rainbow. Rainbow Chuck Taylors. How on earth did he get his hands on them? Josephine stared at the sneakers until they were only inches away from her own silver sandals.
"Um. Hi." William mumbled after a moment.
Jose looked up with a small smile. "Hey."
"So..." He trailed off.
"This way." She said quickly, taking his hand and pulling him in the right direction.
They walked in silence for a long while, neither of them having the courage to start any type of a conversation. Josephine silently enjoyed the sensation of the wind playing with her ponytailed curls while she waited.
"I... I'm sorry. I should have told you sooner." William said quietly after about a minute longer of silence.
Jose chuckled. "It's alright. I mean, I pretty much just enforced your reasoning for not telling. I'm sorry for overreacting. It's not your fault."
"Actually it is."
"How?"
William sighed. "Lung Cancer. From smoking."
Josephine frowned. "You smoke?" The idea of it surprised her.
"No."
"But you just said-"
"I did. Not anymore though." He clarified.
Josephine nodded slowly and was silent again.
They were only just turning a corner when the most important question flew into her mind. "Are you afraid?" she whispered, looking into his eyes.
An odd expression crossed his features and he was silent.
"I'm sorry. I shouldn't-"
"No,It's alright." William sighed before stopping abruptly in front of the house they were walking by. "I...Well...I'm more afraid of leaving the ones I love. I've never really feared death, when it happens, it happens but I just never pictured that I'd be in the situation where I would know that I was... dying."
Josephine put a hand over her mouth as she felt the tears well up. "I'm so sorry." Her voice cracked as she spoke.
William cocked his head to one side and stared at her for a short moment before slowly pulling her into a tight hug. "It's alright. I'm alright. Everything going to be alright. You don't have to be upset, there's really nothing-"
"There's a lot to worry about William. Five months? More like four and a half, and that's If we're lucky." She took a long and calming breath before her emotions made her do something stupid. "I don't want to lose you Will. But I love you too much to let you go. So I'm going to stick it out to the end, that is if you'll forgive me."
Josephine watched as he leaned back a bit, being careful not to let her go. "Forgive you? What's there to forgive?" He replied with a wide grin, before gently kissing her forehead.
Josephine smiled happily, she would be perfectly content with just staying here, wrapped in the safety of his arms.
"Oh and Jose?" He asked casually.
"Yeah?"
"I love you. Did you know?"
She laughed loudly, leaning against his chest. "I figured that much, but it's nice to hear all the while."
William's grin didn't leave his face as his lips moved to her ear. "In that case," He whispered seductively. "Je t'aime, and Te amo, Jeg elsker dig, and did I mention that I love you?" William finished with a quiet chuckle.
She blushed slightly. "In three different languages I do believe. What was that last one?"
"Danish." He replied kissing her ear.
"hmm."
William moved a loose piece of hair that was in the way of the path he was kissing, but said nothing.
"Will you just do it already? I've been waiting patiently."
He stopped abruptly to look into her eyes in confusion. "Do what?"
Josephine rolled her eyes. "Aren't you going to kiss me?"
He pondered on it for a moment before shrugging and obediently bringing his lips to her own.
