PROLOGUE:
Regina James. A single mom with two beautiful kids, Carter and Brooklyn, Carter's name is derived from my grandpa's late brother, and Brooklyn is named after my mother, Lyn. We live in my grandparent's house on Winchester Boulevard, the house I renovated myself, with furniture I bought myself, my kids are well fed, educated, and know how to take care of themselves. They're my everything, and we're perfectly happy.
"When are you going to get a boyfriend mom?" Brooke asked, somewhat jokingly, seated on the bar island situated in the middle of our kitchen. I gave her a smile.
"Who needs a boyfriend when I got you and Carter." I say, bopping her nose as I pass by her to put the brownies in the oven.
And to be honest, I don't. My priority's Carter and Brooke. Ben, my... ex, left me after finding out I was pregnant with Brooklyn. We were going to get married after Carter turned five. It was the worse year of my life, I had to depend on Will for the time being. I moved out of Ben's shitty apartment in San Diego, got my rights on Carter and left, barely four weeks pregnant.
It hurt, the stress wasn't good for me or the baby. But I had Carter. He cheered me up, he helped with chores, volunteered to go with me to my checkups. And that's when I realized, my kids were enough. That I was enough for them. So I didn't really look into dating. No flings, no one night stands, no nothing. Just a wonderful domestic life with my kids.
I stared out the window as a moving truck pulled up on the empty house beside us. Mrs. Mercado moved out to go back to Mexico to her family, decided to let a close friend take care of the house for her. Looks like this might be the friend.
"Brooke! Carter!" I called out as I picked up the container of cookies me and Brooke made earlier. We baked too many and the new neighbor seemed nice enough to be cookie disposal. She must be a senior for all we know. I put a hand on my waist. Where were those kids? I sighed and walked over to the staircase, holding onto the railing. "Brooke! Carter! Come on, new neighbor protocol!"
No response.
Huh.
I shrug my shoulders and take the container. I'll just make them go later. I walk to the main door and shut it behind me quickly, just before Parker, our German shepherd, followed me out. He may just be a puppy, but he's made it his duty to follow anyone of us three to make sure we're safe. This is why we didn't install a doggy door for him. I walk the sidewalk climb the little pathway up to the main door.
I know my way to the house, so it was probably a good idea I pay the new neighbor a visit, go help around and teach him which things are which. I press the doorbell gently and let the familiar ring alert the new guy. I looked at the cookies and pressed a finger on one of them, checking at the hardness of them. Hopefully they weren't too hard for them to chew on.
The door opens, revealing a tall young man with remarkably many tattoos, brownish-blonde hair tousled over at one side. He stood 6 feet, I'm guessing, wearing skinny jeans and a dark gray v-neck, a silver chain with a little charm dangling in between his pecs.
Okay... I was not expecting that.
"Um, hi." he says with a boyish grin. I nod my head and give him a sweet smile.
"Hi neighbor."
"Elijah O'Connell." he says, putting his hand out, on his knuckles the numbers 1981 tattooed in black.
"Regina James." I introduced, as he let's go of my hand, arms crossed over his chest, but still, a friendly aura surrounding him. "So, you're the guy Mrs. Mercado's been talking about."
"Ah, all good things I'm hopin'," Elijah lets out a playful groan, making me laugh.
"All good things. Heard you were a doctor?"
"A vet specifically." Elijah smiled. He then opens the door wide. "You... wanna come in? I can fix you with something."
