The loading bay of Solstice Engineering had been transformed into something halfway between a careers fair and a training exercise.

Orange traffic cones marked out demonstration areas. A police Volvo SUV, matched by the Police Van with its rear doors open sat beside a flame red fire engine polished to the point it reflected the warehouse lights. An ambulance was parked with its rear doors open, old display equipment neatly displayed for employees to handle under supervision.

About two hundred factory workers drifted between displays, paper cups of tea or coffee in hand. some genuinely interested, others clearly just happy to be away from their workstations for half a day.

The event had been organised after several workplace accidents across the region. The idea was simple, show employees how the emergency services worked together during major incidents, explain what happened after an emergency call, and give people practical first-aid advice.

Simple one might think.

What nobody had advertised was that every service considered today an unofficial competition.

"Those cones aren't straight." Firefighter Y/n L/n looked over from where she was arranging hydraulic rescue tools.

"They're cones." Police Sergeant Choi Lia folded her arms.

"They're crooked cones. Take pride in your work."

"They're designed to stop traffic, not impress you." Lia smirked.

"You've been here a minute, got standards?"

"We do." The police officer replied.

"Clearly not." Y/n rolled her eyes.

"You've been here a minute and you've already parked across three bays."

"The lorry is larger than your little police car. It deserves its spotlight."

"Our little police car can actually corner."

"Our truck carries enough water to wash your ego away." Y/n argued making a quick dismissive action with her arm.

Lia laughed despite herself. "There she is."

"What?"

"The personality."

"I have one." She said flatly.

"It's well hidden." Lia pointed out.

Their colleagues watched from nearby. PC Hwang Yeji quietly nudged another officer. "Tenner says they're arguing before nine-thirty."

Firefighter Shin Ryujin didn't even look up from checking breathing apparatus. "They started before they got out of their vehicles."

"Fair point."

Nobody quite remembered exactly how Lia and Y/n had first met. Some said it had been a serious road traffic collision twelve months ago.
Others insisted it had been a warehouse fire. One rumour suggested a rescue involving an escaped horse.

Whatever the truth, which those two knew clearly but never divulged. In fact their involvement preceeded that of the work incident. That was just the aftermath. They had in fact met a bar a few weeks prior, Y/n had transferred station, to whip the local fire crew into shape.

On a rare couple of days off Lia had gone out with her friends outside the precinct. Where she met Y/n, eyed her across the bar. The new face catching her interest, ofcourse one thing led to another and they spent the night together after getting know each other on a surface level. Gauging if either was a criminal and would end up murdered in a ditch somewhere.
