Despite how much I liked the scene, I had to scrap it; the characters' emotional weight shifted significantly by the end, and the scene no longer aligned with them. Consequently, it has been completely discarded and will be rewritten to better suit the story and its evolution. This is from a book I plan to publish by the end of the year, I hope I count on your support.

Happy reading.

I watched her walk confidently toward the gate of an abandoned apartment building. Using my powers, I sensed her opening the chained gate; she walked right in as if it were nothing, with the little runt trailing behind her. She scooped him up and headed toward the back of the building.I stayed in the car, waiting for nightfall. The place looked eerie after dark, but I knew a very dangerous female was waiting for me inside. I hopped the fence after confirming the chained gate was indeed locked. I followed the path she had taken; upon reaching the rear, I spotted a door leading to an employee lounge. Venturing deeper into the building, I found it sparsely furnished—it seemed to be one of those structures built before the artificial islands were constructed. I walked toward the elevator; it appeared to be without power, though—as I noted

—only certain areas were illuminated.

I found a red sign marked "Stairs," opened the door, and began to climb. The corridors were narrow and lined with small apartments, though the units grew larger the higher I went; the floors were thick with dust. That meant it would be easy to spot which unit Ann was in—if she was occupying one at all. A few footsteps and the sound of a woman's laughter—accompanied by a male voice—drifting up from a lower floor caught my attention.

Young people looking for fun—and finding it by causing chaos. An animalistic growl from me would have sent them running, but I decided to let it slide. I stepped into a side corridor to let the young lovers pass by. Just then, a flashlight beam began to illuminate the steps; the young couple walked past, holding hands, paused briefly to kiss, and continued on their way. That was when I noticed them: footprints in the dust and a welcoming light spilling from beneath a doorway. I heard the rain begin to fall; it echoed throughout the building.

"Thanks to the lovebirds for a bit of light." I opened the door very stealthily; the lights were on inside. Ann was smart, obviously, and knew what she was doing. The entryway held nothing but a coffee table and a sofa piled with pillows and blankets; outside, there was a huge balcony where I could make out some furniture. The crazy girl had really put her stamp on the place—I knew that wasn't anything new—but she had turned her apartment into a simple, cozy space. Ann had stacks of books on a shelf that looked like she'd built it herself out of reclaimed wood. Just then, the power went out. A flash of lightning briefly illuminated the room; I looked around and suddenly spotted small purple circles near the doorway to another room. They vanished just as quickly as they'd appeared.

I immediately took off after her, but the problem was that Ann wasn't making a sound, and—worse—I couldn't see a thing, so she managed to slam the door in my face. I shoved the door open and tried to run, but kept bumping into things; that was when I felt something furry at my feet.

"What kind of guard dog is this? It doesn't even bark!" I grabbed the puppy by the scruff of its neck and lifted it up; it had the tiniest teeth.

"He's mute!" Ann shouted inside my head.

"Come out wherever you are, kitty, and I won't hurt you." Just then, I heard the front door open and close. "Damn it." I opened the door, and a cloud of gas took me by surprise—a damn fire extinguisher. I coughed a bit and tried to clear away the dust, but it hung thick in the air. I didn't know how to protect myself in this open space against a silent enemy the size of a child; my feet left the ground and I fell flat on my back. Ann straddled my hips, and finally, a flash of lightning let in a bit of light; she had a weapon pointed at my head, and I had one pointed at hers.
