Alexia sat on her bed watching cartoons. She laughed when Jerry tricked Tom into his own trap. She could remember a faint memory of her mom sitting on the couch with her, watching cartoons. She shook the memory from her head and refocused her attention to the television but felt a tear roll down her cheek. She quickly wiped it from her face. Now's not the time to be a baby she reminded herself. She turned her attention back to the show and chuckled as Tom got his head stuck in the hole in the wall. Mom always loved this episode she thought to herself. "Ugh!" Alexia exclaimed turning the tv off. Alexia stretched and heard her stomach grumble. She shook her head and went into the kitchen. She looked in the pantry and saw a box of cake batter. She smiled and took the box out of the pantry. She preheated the oven and collected all of the ingredients. Next she mixed the batter together and poured it into a pan. She put the pan in the oven and set the timer for 30 minutes. Alexia looked at the clock, almost an hour until Steph would be home from school. She sat down with a spoon and the bowl of left-over cake batter. She put a spoonful of batter into her mouth and smiled. "Mmm," she said out loud. Alexia could remember helping her mom in the kitchen when she was little, her dad always loved homemade cake. The three of them always used to have so much fun baking, but they quit baking when her dad passed away from cancer, and they had never really picked it back up. Alexia frowned at the thought of her dad, I wonder if he's been watching over me the entire time, she wondered. Alexia shook her head and went back to her cake batter. Once the bowl was empty, she stood up and went over to the sink. She filled the sink with hot water and soap and put all of the dirty dishes in the water. She had just finished drying the last dish when Steph walked in the door. "Something smells good!" Steph cried setting her bags on the couch. "It's almost done," Alexia said as she sat down on a stool. Steph sat beside her, "How was your day today?". "It was good, boring, but good," Alexia replied, "and how was school?". "Eh," Steph said shrugging her shoulders. They both laughed, Alexia heard the oven beep and stood up from the stool. "I thought Thomas was coming over today?" Alexia asked pulling the cake out of the oven. "He didn't show up at school today," Steph said pulling out her books. Alexia sat the cake down on the counter. "That's because he has my mom, " she said only loud enough for her to hear.
