Chapter 19:
-Katniss-
“Let us in!”
“No!” I yell back.
“Fine” I hear Clove retort.
I buried my head under the pillows I gathered on the couch.
“Come here” Annie says removing the pillows.
I groan and she lifts my head and sits down. I lay my head on her lap and she starts to comb through my hair.
“So…” Johanna awkwardly starts.
“I don’t want to talk about it” I say frustrated.
“Just tell him we’re through” I hiss.
“We will. But have you talked?” Glimmer says.
“No” I mumble.
“Talk to him” Annie says, stroking my hair. I felt sleepy again.
“You really should” Johanna says.
“I honestly have nothing to say” Clove says darkly.
“But Clove-“ Glimmer and Clove started bickering.
Their voiced were growing faint. And once again, I found myself being trapped into sleep.
-Annie-
Katniss started to sleep as Glim and Clove bickered.
“Shut it” I hissed at them.
They look to me and I point to Katniss.
“Oh” they say.
“they have to talk” Glimmer says.
“I know I know” Clove says.
“I’ll get Peet” Jo says.
“But she’s asleep!” I protest.
“We’ll leave. He’ll stay. When she wakes, they’ll talk” Jo grins and sets off.
“Oh dear” Clove says.
“Well. I hope they work it out” Glim says and flops down on Clove’s bed.
-Johanna-
“Peeta” I say. His head snaps up and he looks pissed.
“What?” he asks
“Talk to her” I say leaning against the door frame.
“May I?” he asks. I nod and we walk back to Clove’s room in silence. He was about to reach for the doorknob when I blocked the door.
“Peet, why’d you do it?” I ask.
His eyes bore into mine for a few minutes. He took a breath and answered me.
“I was walking with Finn to get ice cream. I stayed behind to carry the last few cups. Delly appeared and talked to me. And obviously she was flirting so I let her down. I told her that I didn’t like her and I asked her to please stop flirting. She said okay but only if I kiss her. And she said I had to make it seem like I did care” he finishes.
“So you kissed her” I say.
“Yeah”
“And Katniss happened to see” I say.
“Yeah” he repeats.
”So here. Talk” I move away from the door and he enters.
I meet Glim and Cloves eyes. I nod and they leave the room.
“Annie” I call.
She rests Katniss’ head on the pillow and leaves.
-Katniss-
I wake up again. I let out a groan and hug Annie tighter. I realized that I was hugging a pillow, not a person.
“Ann?” I croak out.
“They left you and me” Peeta’s voice answers me.
I stare at him and he passes me a glass of water.
“Thanks” I mutter.
“Katniss let me explain” he says.
“Explain? You’re here to explain?” I say, already annoyed.
“And to apologize” he adds.
“Peeta please, spare me. I’ve seen you pull her closer. You pulled her closer” I grit my teeth.
“She asked me to kiss her”
“Geez. You did it considering there’s a girl right here who lo- likes you very much” I feel my face heating up.
“I’m sorry!” he cuts me off.
“Well apology unaccepted” I snap.
“Will you please let me explain? Goddammit Katniss listen!” he raised his voice.
I refuse to look at him and nod.
“She was flirting I let her down. She said she’d stop if I gave her a kiss. And I had to make it look like I cared” he explains.
I still didn’t feel convinced.
“I’m sorry Katniss for hurting you” he reaches out to me and I flinch away from his touch, moving to the farthest end of the couch.
“Did you even consider how I’d feel about this? You swapping spit with that bitch?”
“I thought you wanted that. Finally she’d stop”
“I rather deal with her constantly flirting with you or any of the shit she gives me than seeing her kissing you” I say, close to tears.
Why couldn’t he just understand? I’m not ready to forgive him. Not now.
“I don’t think this is helping either of us” I say.
He nods.
“Just please. Leave me for now” I say looking at the window.
“I’m really sorry” he says and stands up to leave.
“Katniss?” he says. I look at him.
“One last thing” he says. I walk to him by the door.
“What is it?”
“Are you through with me?” he says, standing outside the door now.
My hand tightened around the doorknob.
“Yes” I started to turn away when he holds on to my wrist which still had the bracelet.
“You know I love you right?”
“I know” I say silently before pulling my wrist away and closing the door.
I stayed by the door, unsure of what to do. I lay on my bed with my earphones plugged in.
No tears, I remind myself. I hear the door open and in came the girls. I sit up and look at them. They all had sympathetic looks.
“You heard?” I ask.
“We all did” Glimmer answers and they sit down beside me.
“It’s okay to cry you know?” Annie says.
I bit my lip, trying to hold back sobs. I have no idea why I felt so hurt.
“Let it out” Johanna says and pats my arm.
“Just this once” Clove says.
Without thinking, I hug Johanna and cry, letting it all out. Sobs were racking my body uncontrollably.
“Shhh.. ” Johanna says and hugs me back.
“It hurts” I mumble
“I know love” Annie says and squeezes my hand. I hold on, letting it all out for once.
