Chapter 32:
-Katniss-
The next morning, Clove and I dropped by Peeta’s bakery to pick up a cake. I had texted him yesterday to place an order. I opened the door and the warm air met me. Peeta was fiddling with his phone by the counter with a box beside him.
“Morning” I greeted him.
“Same to you. And here you go” he handed me a box. “
Thank you so much Peet!” I smiled up at him.
Placing, the box on a nearby table, I muttered “Damn. No car today”
“No problem. You can go ahead. I’ll bring the cake with me” he said.
“Thanks so much Peet” I gave him a friendly hug before leaving.
-Finnick-
Today, I had planned to help Peeta. I expected a whole list of stuff to do but found none.
“Is this the cake?” I asked, peeking in the box.
“Yeah. I’m quite proud actually. I really put effort on the design”
“I see” I replied.
“Do you still have errands to run?” I continued.
“No” he said just when his phone beeped.
“Actually I have to go to the store” Peeta said, jolting off his chair.
“I’ll drive” I replied.
“No. Stay here. Guard the cake” he said sternly before leaving.
Sighing, I sat back down on the chair, watching the box resting on the nearby table. The bell by the door rang as a mother and two kids entered. I walked behind the counter, deciding I should take over for Peeta for the meantime.
“Do you still have a loaf of raisin bread?” the mother asked.
“I’ll check in the back” I smiled politely before doing so. I came back, holding one wrapped and handed it to her.
“I left my money in the car, I’ll be back” the mother said and dashed out.
“Sure” I said a second too late.
I leaned forward, my elbows resting on the counter. My eyes scanned the room and they rested on the two kids running around.
“Hey!” I called out “Kids be careful!”
One of them stopped by the table where Peeta left the cake and the other kid just happened to start running.
“Wait!” I said.
Too late, they both knocked the table over, with the box holding the cake. “
Sh-“ I stopped myself when the mother came in.
“Here- Oh! I’m so sorry. I’ll just pay for that” She handed me the money and left with those two munchkins, scolding them on the way out.
How in the world will I explain this to Peet?
I thought. I picked up the box and took a look at the cake. It may not have spilled from the box but it’s definitely destroyed. The icing was everywhere, the cake itself was falling apart
