XII. Newborn/Obstetrics - Part 2
I tried to explain it earlier, obstetrics essentially involves everything having to do with childbirth. On the rotation, we focus on becoming skilled in managing vaginal deliveries, assisting with Cesarean Sections, and managing antepartum (before labor) problems. The newborn portion of this rotation is where we learn about how to evaluate a healthy newborn and how to recognize an infant who is sick. We learn about situations that can set a baby or mom up for infections or postpartum (after delivery) complications. This month I actually get to focus on refining skills, rather than frantically worrying about what administrative task I've forgotten.
