Elizabeth

Over the course of the next few days, Draco and I have attempted to make ourselves less suspicious to the nosy Gryffindor trio, as well as Pansy and my other friends, and Crabbe and Goyle. We went to dinner and lunch at least three times a week, and tried to retire early from the Room of Requirement to lounge in the Slytherin Common rooms, which was what we were doing now.

It was about 9:15 this snowy January evening, and there were few students in the common room tonight.

Draco and I were sitting at one of the tables, skimming through our schoolbooks, pretending to be occupied with our studying.

9:15 turned into 10:15, and 10:15 turned into 11:15, and now there were no students in the common room except for me and Draco. Unable to concentrate on my notes for my Herbology quiz, I slammed my books shut and shoved them back into my bag.

I got up from the table and walked over to the crackling fire, lit green for Slytherin.

A couple minutes later, I heard a chair being pushed back and footsteps coming closer.

"Elizabeth." Draco said as he stood next to me.

I didn't look at him, I continued to stare into the fire.

Thoughts of the cabinet and Voldemort and the Dark Mark and killing Dumbledore and the Unbreakable Vow ran through my head. I felt horrible keeping what I did to protect Draco a secret from him, and I didn't know how much longer I could hold it in.

I turned to look at Draco. His face was bright from the light from the fire, and made his eyes look a darker gray than usual. He stared at me.

"Are we going to die, Draco?" I asked him the first thing on my mind.

"What makes you say that?"

"If we don't fix this Vanishing Cabinet, Bellatrix and the other won't be able to get through. And that won't be good, because you can't Apperate to or from Hogwarts. Then they won't be able to cause havoc at the school after...you know...and Voldemort will get angry we didn't do what he wanted and...we'll all be screwed."  I said.

Draco turned his head to the side as he gazed wistfully into the fire. He was clenching his jaw and gripping the mantle with his left hand.

He looked back at me after a few minutes.

"Elizabeth, we still have 5 months or so to work on the cabinet. Just because we don't have a lot of luck now, doesn't mean we won't be lucky ever. We're gonna keep working on it, and it'll fix. Don't worry."

He moved closer to me, still intently looking at me.

"We're not going to die. You're not going to die. I won't let that happen."

I thought of the Unbreakable Vow once more and walked away from Draco and the fire.

"Elizabeth?" Draco asked, starting to walk after me.

"Don't say that." I said quietly.

"Say what? That I'm not gonna let you die?" asked Draco.

"Yeah."

"Why can't I say it? I'm being serious."

I sighed.

"You should be grateful that I said that to you." Draco said irritably.
