An old woman got to her feet. I couldn't help staring at her, her face was much older than I had ever thought she would look. Her piercing blue eyes were staring at us.
Behind her was a Guardian. He was holding her up.
"Welcome Guardians." Her voice was soft and low. "Come forward." She sounded like if she was struggling to talk. We made our way over to hear. I couldn't lift my eyes from her. She had aged badly. I had never seen an Immortal look like her.
"You look just like your father." The Old Queen smiled at Ezra. Ezra bowed his head respectfully. Thomas stepped up towards her. "and you my boy just like both your parents. They are so proud of you." She put her hand on my face. It was cold. She stared into my eyes but didn't say anything. "A long road awaits the three of you. All of you" she turned to look at the standing audience. She lowered her hand from my face. "Please sit."
Everybody in the room sat down. Chairs were pulled up for us. It was surprising to see many people present even Byron was present.
"I have received word" she lifted a letter up for us to see. "that many of King Boris sons are fighting each other to overthrow the Chancellor" she shifted in her seat. "Iris, before you were born" she cleared her throat. "Your parents made plans with King Boris, a treat was supposed to be signed to end the murders of Immortals."
"What's his name?" my stomach squirmed.
"Prince Taron Devot"
"What?" my stomach dropped heavily. I had gotten to my feet. Ezra grabbed my hand and held me back down.
"We all thought he was dead but he was spotted. There are rumors that he is going to take back the throne." She lifted the letter towards me. I didn't touch it.
"Did he know we were supposed to get married?" I asked her. I would kill him if he had been lying to me all this time.
"No, he did not. One of his sisters was supposed to marry the Heir which will happen after his coronation." Nobody was speaking or even breathing.
"Taron and I met over the summer in Africa" I told her. Byron's eyes flashed at me. "We have made an alliance"
"Iris you trusted a Warlock?" her eyes flickered towards Dr. Nan.
"A banished Warlock Prince" I reminded her. "As for the marriage, it won't happen."
"That will be your choice." The Old Queen nodded at me. "The Chancellor thinks his brother is dead. That shall change shortly but is still willing to negotiate the marriage of his sister to our future King but we think you should keep it."
I opened my mouth to argue with her. She lifted her hand.
"I have said it will be your choice if you go through with it or not. We can build a stronger bond between the Immortals and Warlocks. I am granting you that choice but make your decision carefully." She took a deep breath.
"Phillip and Elizabeth have resigned their posts but they will not stay quiet." the Old Queen's voice was shaking. "I have named a successor until next August." She took a deep breath. "Byron Enden, you have been named Regent King until the Heir takes the throne"
Byron hadn't moved from his spot. His face was frozen in a state of shock.
"Shit." Ezra replied under his breath.
"Your job will be to keep him safe until then. If all else shall fail, Byron Enden will be named King in August." A shiver ran through me.
