"Never really felt bad about it, as we drank deep from a lie. 'Cause I felt melting magnets, babe, the second I saw you through half-shut eyes."
-
"Mom, please take me with you. Please." I cried out, feeling a shiver run down my spine at the thought of seeing, no, being in the same room with Alec Vermont. Just the name made me exhale a shaky breath and nervously bring my fingertips to my mouth. He was no doubt the most terrifying, cruelest person at our school; also known as the 'bad boy'. He was beautiful, though..But so mean.
"Avalon, calm down right now. It's not going to be that bad. Mrs. and Mr.Vermont are kind, intelligent people. They will make you feel at home right away!" She spoke in a sing-song voice, painting a cheeky smile on her face. "Besides, it's only for two months." Exactly. I might as well start planning my funeral, while I'm at it.
"Your mother is right, Avi. Olivia is president of our local book club. If that doesn't tell you something, then you know something we don't." That caused a small chuckle to escape from my pursed lips. I have met Olivia before, and she is very, very nice. Almost too nice. And Jackson is your average dad. He grills out every weekend, and forces you to watch the game on Sundays. I am very excited about staying with them, but Alec..That's another story.
"I know, I know. But..Ugh. I'm gonna miss you guys." I sighed. My mother looked through the rear-view mirror as she was driving and grinned.
"We will miss you so much more, honey." My mom said happily. I stifled a laugh and looked outside of my window, noticing that we were now driving through a large neighborhood that with-held large houses row-by-row. Soon, we were pulling into the driveway of Olivia's house. I quickly swallowed the lump that had formed in my throat and took in the houses exterior. It was unlike my expectations for Alec, nothing of the sorts I had imagined him living in. It was a two story, brick molded house with a wrap-around porch and a front door that could hold at least three people from shoulder-to-shoulder. The yard was decorated with several different types of flowers and on the first step of the porch was a small dog statue that had a 'Welcome' sign hanging from its mouth. "It looks like Olivia did some remodeling, huh, Chad?" My mom fawned, stepping out of the car and closing the door behind her. My dad nodded and did the same. However, I just stayed put. I did not want to get out. Nope. Dying was not on my bucket list, and will not be anytime soon. My mom groaned and slung my door open, pulling me out of the car.
"Why must you go on this cruise and leave your dearest, most precious, fragilest, only daughter behind?" I whined aloud. My parents shook their heads at my actions, my dad cascading a loose arm around my shoulder.
"Because it's our anniversary, and if they do perhaps take away our dearest, most precious, fragilest, only daughter, we can always make another. Can't we, Lilith?" My dad winked. I screeched and tore away from him, leaving the two in a pool of laughter.
"Gee, thanks, dad." My dad opened the trunk and pulled my two suitcases from their stationary, lugging it behind him as we walked towards the house. I never would have thought being here would be this scary. Nevertheless a house that screamed friendly all over it. It made me wonder how such nice people could raise a son that was so unsociable and heartless. Before I knew it, my mom was ringing the doorbell. A hollow echo of the 'ding-dong' sound called out, and I prayed that Alec was not the one to answer it. The door gradually began to swing open and thankfully, God answered my prayers. Olivia opened the door with a huge smile that even made me smile. She wrapped her arms around my mom and dad and giggled happily.
"Welcome, welcome. It is so great having you guys come! Please, do come inside." Olivia spoke in a sweet tone that reminded me of a lullaby. She closed the door behind us and I soon saw Jackson coming around the corner, a wide grin on his features.
"Chad! Nice seeing you again, man!" He called out, doing that weird half hug/half high five thing guys do and exchanging conversation.
"Hey, I am going to go outside with Jackson for a minute. I'll be right back." My dad said, giving my mom a kiss on the cheek before pacing himself outside. They reminded me of two little boys. I couldn't help but laugh aloud, which caused Olivia's attention to be focused on me. She stared at me for a minute, a growing grin pulling at the corners of her lips. I stood there awkwardly and smiled back.
"Avalon, you have grown so much since I last saw you! You are gorgeous!" She squealed. I laughed and hugged her, pulling away at a necessary timing. "How old are you now, dear?" Olivia asked attentively, keeping her palms locked on each of my shoulders.
"Seventeen today, ma'am." I chirped. She rolled her eyes jokingly and pulled me into another hug that could have likely killed me if she were holding just a tad bit tighter. I gave my mom an alerting plea for help, but she just stood there with an amused expression. Evil mom.
"Please, call me Olivia! Now, It is getting rather late. I suppose we let your parents take off to the airport, shall we? And then I will show you to your room." Olivia detached herself from me and I expressed an exasperated breath of relief, but then the panic of knowing that somewhere in that house was a murderous, egotistical teenager by the name of Alec Vermont began to conceal me, yet again.
"Right, right. I guess we should get going." My mom smiled at Olivia, locking her fingers together and holding them in front of her.
"I'll go get Chad and Jackson, you two stay right here." Olivia walked around the corner and disappeared within sight. I looked at my mom and gulped. She chuckled, wrapping her arms around me and kissing my forehead.
"If this is going to be that big of a problem for you to cope with, sweety, we can just cancel the trip entirely." I shook my head vigorously and looked my mom in the eye.
"No. It's you and dads anniversary trip, go have fun. OH! Send me tons of pictures and bring me back a t-shirt if you can." I replied. She rolled her eyes and laughed.
"Will do, kiddo. Remembe-" The sound of footsteps distracted me and my mom from conversing, and I watched as my dad and Mr.Vermont came walking with Olivia pressuring the two forwards as if they were carriage horses.
"Now get out of here, you two! We will take great care of little Avalon." My mom and dad smiled. Dad gave me a hug and a kiss goodbye, then my mom did as well and they were gone. I watched as their car pulled out of the driveway. "Okay, Avalon. Are you ready to unpack your bags and get comfortable?" Olivia smiled. I nodded sheepishly and reached for my suitcases.
"I got it, honey." Jackson said, lifting each of them with ease. I followed Olivia upstairs and down the hallway, passing what looks to be Alec's room right beside mine. Oh joy. She flicked on the lights and we all walked inside.
"I hope you like it, Avalon. If you need anything, be sure to ask me or Jackson, one. This is the closet, and that door over there is the bathroom. Do you need any toiletries or towels?" I smiled at her kindness and shook my head, taking a seat on the bed.
"Thank you so much for letting me stay, Olivia. It means a lot." I spoke, feeling around on the ruffled comforter and dozens of pillows that scattered across the bed beautifully.
"Aw, it's not a problem at all. You are welcome to go downstairs and watch television if you want. Me and Jackson are just going to go to bed, and Alec, as I am sure you know him, is asleep as well so you should not have a problem with him. Make yourself at home, though, honey! The refrigerator has been recently filled and you can have whatever you want." I couldn't believe how amazing she is. I think that I will be perfectly fine as long as I stay out of Alec's way and try to avoid him as much as possible.
"Thanks again, Olivia. Sleep well." I grinned toothily.
"Goodnight, darling." Jackson and Olivia both walked out, being sure to close the door behind them. I changed out of my clothes and put on a pair of Nike Spandex with a loose, old t-shirt that cupped around my waist. Now that I was comfortable, I lied back for a moment and scrolled through Instagram and Twitter, making sure Olivia and Jackson were surely asleep before I went downstairs.
