Fear engulfed me, just like the flames engulfing the house. I stood, frozen, in complete shock. Cameron. He was in there.
"Cameron!" I bellowed as I shot off towards the house. Crashing through the front door, the smoke made a violent introduction to my lungs. Chokes, coughs and sputters ripped through my oesophagus. My eyes began bursting with water, as I sprinted deeper into the house. The flames hadn't yet made it upstairs, but they had let their destructive touch caress the lounge and kitchen, painting both rooms in fiery red, white-hot orange and black. Deep, thick black. Which seemed to suck all light and life from the room into its abyss.
"Cameron!" I shouted again.
Hearing a small, strained cough, I whirled around. It came from the abyss that was the kitchen - the entrance being guarded by a small army of fiery soldiers.
I had no choice. I had to trust the outfit I had on would protect me from the flames.
Closing my eyes, I bowed my head and ran, flat out.
Next thing I knew, Cameron was slumped on the floor in front of me. I had made it through the wall of hell - but this wasn't over yet. My heart was drumming against the inside of my rib cage. I could hear the blood coursing in my ears. Each step was a mission in itself to take.
After what seemed like eternity, I reached Cameron and knelt down, checking for a pulse. And there it was - the slow thud, thud, thud of his heart.
"Lexi leave." He said, suddenly seeming to have woken. My face creased over in a frown and his comment went unheeded.
"Dad's going to be here any second."
I looked at him, heart rate picking up to light-speed.
"What?" I said, deciding to try pick him up. I soon found out that my muscles needed some strength training.
"Lexi, leave me. I'll be just fine. Dad's gonna be here soon and he will be distracted." Cameron said through a strained voice, looking up at me with an odd look on his face.
The mere idea of leaving him here made my heart ache. What if he died?
"Go save Kade, Lex." He gurgled, giving me a weak smile. I nodded as a tear dropped onto his cheek, sizzling and evapourating immediately in the heat. I gave Cameron a short hug and found my way out the kitchen, only to find dad's car pulling up the drive way.
Invisibility time.
I strolled out the house and right past my dad, who was rushing inside, obviously concerned. He didn't even have a clue I was there. I gave him a look of utter, absolute hatred and wished he could see it - and feel it.
Then, my mind started formulating plans. I needed to get into his workplace somehow - and the only way was with an access card. I ran to my dad's car, still invisible. Like someone in a desperate, emergency rush, he had left the door wide open and it was easy to search the car for his access card. Moments later the sun visor revealed it to me, sharing its hiding place with no resistance whatsoever.
Excitement gushed through my veins as I grabbed the card. Now, time for action. Moments later, I was super speeding towards my dad's work, looking forward to kicking some butt.
It would take twenty minutes to get there with super speed, opposed to 40 by car.
On the way there my mind was constantly working, thinking up ideas, crafting a plan of action. Eventually I settled on one idea. The most obvious one: sneaking in using my invisibility powers, using my dad's card to enter the base.
Arriving there, it looked like any normal building. Except there was one thing out the ordinary. There were absolutely no windows. I had never seen such an incredible lack of glass before... Not that that was surprising, considering the stuff they get up to in there.
Other than the deprivation of windows, the exterior was relatively uninteresting. Tall, white-washed walls boasted a modern, sleek design, with metal balconies that led to only more white-washed walls. The occasional door was the only means of escape from this place, it seemed.
I arrived at the entrance and went through some rotating doors, still invisible, knowing full well how odd it must be to see a revolving door start moving with nobody there. Yet, I continued on. As I walked into the building I saw a short, stocky man crouching over some paperwork at the front desk. He wasn't as old as my dad - but he was far from young either. His brown hair revealed specs of grey, dotted all over his head. Blue eyes darted all over the paperwork - he won't notice me.
Using the access card, I made my way through the barriers only to find myself in a long hallway with many doors leading to many different places.
I had no clue where to go. Fear was beginning to creep in.
I stalked down the hallway, carefully looking at the each label that accompanied each door. Eventually I got to some very weird names such as "Experiment room A" and "Suspect A" and "Power People". The last one caused me to stop dead in my tracks. Power People? Could that be referring to people like me? I edged to the door and putting a shaky hand on the knob. It wasn't locked - I walked straight in only to find nothing. There wasn't anything in here, besides a few more numbered doors, each accompanied by a label with a super powers on it. I examined each, finding that only three had been taken up. The powers had complex, scientific names and I couldn't identify what was what so I decided to just go for the first door.
I opened it up, finding it empty. No one was in there, nor had anybody been here for a while. The only furniture in the sparsely decorated room was a thin mattress, and wiry metal side table that looked like it was about to collapse in on itself. Other than that, the room was spotless. I walked in and the side table had a few papers on it - but the only thing on those papers that caught my eye was a big red stamp: TERMINATED.
I delicately picked the papers up and saw a picture of an Indian boy in the top left corner. He was only 14 years old when they found him. And that was only two months ago.
My heart suddenly felt so heavy, like weights had been attached to it. They had killed him two months ago... and hadn't even touched his room.
I dropped the papers and stumbled out the room not-so-quietly shutting the door behind me. My eyes had that stinging feeling as I imagined all that happening... to Kade.
Where was Kade?
I breathed in and out slowly, attempting to calm myself down, with little success.
Nonetheless, I checked the next room. This room was messy. The bed was not made. Dishes on the side table. Papers strewn everywhere. Rushing over to the papers, I quickly located the front cover - this time there was no TERMINATED stamp.
The photo on the front was of a girl; dark black hair laced her shoulders, and blue eyes of course gleamed at the camera. She was an absolutely gorgeous 18-year old.
I sighed, giving the room one last lookover before turning to leave... But then something caught my eye. Blood. Fresh blood. A small puddle on the floor. Feeling my stomach turn at the sight, I walked out the room, stumbling to the next one.
The door opened with ease and the same messy sight met my eyes.
I went up to the table and, like with the last two rooms, found papers. But this time, a picture of Kade adorned the paper. My heart started racing. I had no clue where to find him - there was hardly any information about him in the document.
I sulked out the room feeling as frustrated as can be. Where was Kade?? I was getting tired using my invisibility but I couldn't not use it. I had to find Kade quickly!
I hung my head low and a small spot of red caught my eye. An idea formed. I followed the blood spots from the other girl's room, hoping it would lead me to Kade.
Following the blood, I passed only a few people, but they didn't even have a suspicion that something was awry. My heart rate slowed as each one went by without detecting me.
Soon the blood led to a closed door. The door label read: "Experiment And Research Laboratory."
I took a deep, full breath, looking left and right to see if anyone was coming. Then, the cool metal handle met my hand and I yanked hard, moving swiftly into the room and closing the door behind me, all in one swift motion. Nobody was in here. In front of me was another door and further, a huge window that looked into some the other room.
I went up to the room and the first thing I saw was Kade. Sitting there on the ground... Cuddling with that girl.
