Underwear was all I had on. Not by choice - I simply could not find something to wear... As usual. And don't even get me started on what makeup to put on.
Being a girl is tough!
Collapsing onto my bed in a resigned heap, I could see literally all my clothes sprawled all over the floor. Then, one of the pieces of clothing lifted in the air, dropping back down a second later. A sly smile crossed my face as I congratulated myself on that small achievement. What achievement, you may ask?
Moving things with my mind.
In other words, telekinesis. Cool? I know right. However, I can only move a few things for now, and only a few centimetres at a time. The power is still developing in me, growing, shifting, soon to be fully grown... and fully awesome.
I decided not to be lazy. Standing, I grabbed a fading pair of leggings, my trusty old boots and a purple spaghetti top. My red hair got thrown into a messy bun, just as my brother called from behind my door.
"Lexi? Are you ready?"
I looked myself over in the mirror and approved.
"Nearly, Cameron."
Walking to my bedside table, I unplugged my iPhone and shoved it into my tog bag, only to notice Cameron at my door, an irritated look on his face.
"I told you to be ready at seven, it is now twenty past!"
Ah, the joys of having an older brother.
"Cameron, how many times have I wanted you to be ready on time, but you have been way more than twenty minutes late?" I retorted, striding past him, Cameron on my tail. A bad mood must've been very evident on my face, because he stayed quiet... which was unusual.
"Where's dad?" I asked, looking into the kitchen as I grabbed an apple out of the fruit bowl.
"He had to go to work earlier. Something to do with finding some person in India that can run like super fast."
I frowned at what he had said as we climbed into his navy blue BMW. Super fast? Like me? I've never shown anybody that I can run near the speed of sound, simply because attention is the last thing I want.
As I'm sure you can tell, I was born with these random powers. It's strange. No normal human being has them - so why do I?
I have three of what I call the "basic" powers; super speed, self-healing and telekinesis. On top of that, I can randomly turn my hand invisible. Which is an astronomically strange sight ... and which gave me the fright of my life when I discovered it. I really think it's a useless, stupid power, but the flipside is that anything I touch with that hand, instantly disappears.
Some pretty funny practical jokes can be played with that power.
Nobody knows I have these powers - not even Cameron - nor will anyone ever know. I find it unfair to other people that don't have 'powers', if I'm constantly bragging about them. 'Powers' sounds so stupid, I know, but I have not the faintest clue what to call them.
"Ok Lexi, back to being late." He was not letting this go! "What time did you wake up?"
"Seven." I replied without even thinking, my previous train of thought being rudely derailed.
"How the hell did you get ready in twenty minutes, considering you are such an indecisive person?" He replied, racing the BMW around the corner at an immense speed.
That used to bother me, the way he would zoom around every corner, but since I discovered my speed 'power', I don't even become phased anymore.
Sighing, I distantly stared out the passenger window. "I don't know," came the mumble as the school came into view.
I was currently in year 11. Cameron was in year 12 - but he failed it once. Which I was not surprised at. His 19th birthday had just passed, and my seventeenth birthday was coming up soon - sixth of April, next Wednesday, to be precise. My dad was planning on taking us all to Universal Studios, but he recently acquired a new job and has seemingly been the busiest man on the planet, flying to what seemed to be a million different countries all in the space of a month.
Considering he is forced to support me and my brother all on his own, he has to earn a lot of money. My mom passed away giving birth to me, leaving the three of us to fend for ourselves. Apparently I look just like her with my vibrant red hair; but our eye colours could not be more different. People have described mine as being as blue as the Mauritian sea, while my mom's were just brown. Plain brown. Muddy, chocolate-brown. Just like my brother and father.
You could consider me the odd one out in terms of eye colour.
Pulling into the parking lot, Cameron and I hopped out, each heading our own separate ways. "See you later sis." He called out, as he disappeared into the throngs of people.
Frozen to the spot, I glanced all over for my best friend but couldn't find her. Shrugging, I had to battle through the crowds alone, eventually making it into the school building, after walking into a rugby player, having coffee nearly spilled on me and very nearly tripping over a rogue soccer ball.
My eyes finally landed on her; and, of course, she was talking to her boyfriend, Oliver. When wasn't she talking to this guy?
I snuck up behind my blonde friend and tackled her with a hug, squeezing tight tight.
"Hay Kate!" I squealed.
"Lexi, you're squishing my lungs," She said, gasping for the air that eluded her collapsing lungs.
"Stop overreacting." I laughed, releasing her. Turning to Oliver, I said sweetly, "Hay Kate's boyfriend," giving him a smile before pulling Kate off in the general direction of the bathroom.
"See you later babe." Kate shouted back towards Oliver. He replied with a blown kiss, which Kate seemed to cherish every second of.
"You are far too attached to that boy, Kate." I said sarcastically as we reached the bathroom. "What's the word I'm looking for? Infatuated."
"Why are we in the bathroom again?" Kate asked, ignoring my comment.
"I don't want to be alone as I... you know... Bathrooms have a purpose you know, to relie-"
"Ok I get it." Kate interrupted, trying to hide a smile. I chuckled and gently closed the door of the stall.
"Have you seen Jenna and Amber?" Kate inquired as I came out the stall.
"No, but they are probably stalking my brother and his friends."
Kate laughed and nodded her agreement. I hooked my arm in hers and we trotted out the bathroom together.
"Gosh Lexi, stop walking so fast! My little legs can't keep up with yours," Kate exclaimed as I dragged her along. I hadn't even noticed I was walking so fast.
I blushed a bit and slowed down, "Sorry."
Kate chuckled and we turned the corner to find our first class.
"So, what are you doing for your birthday next week?" Kate asked, sitting down at one of the desks.
"I'm not entirely sure. But I'm thinking of just having a sleep over with you, Jenna and Amber." I replied, taking a seat by my desk.
"Can I invite Oliver?" Kate asked excitedly, a hopeful smile painting her features.
I chuckled at her, "As I said, infatuation."
"You will only understand once you have a boyfriend," Kate said, giving me an awkward smile.
"My time will come."
Just then Jenna and Amber came in, giggling, a tinge of red dotting their cheeks.
I waved at them, and they scampered towards us, still giggling.
"Hay Lexi and Kate!" They said simultaneously, like excited bunnies.
Their girliness put a smile on my face, and I greeted back. It was nice to see them again..
Jenna was wearing a bright turquoise dress on her body, accompanied by black heels and a colorful headband. On the other hand, Amber had a grey hoodie, black leggings and a pair of flat pumps on. They were complete opposites; Jenna with her colorful style, brownish hair and blonde highlights, and Amber, with her dark black hair and pale skin. Kate was sort of in the middle - or should I say, normal - with her blonde hair and pair of jeans that she wears every day.
"Lexi's having a sleepover next week for her birthday!" Kate blurted out excitedly. I smiled awkwardly as Jenna and Amber's eyes grew wide.
"Is Cameron going to be there?" they both squealed. Kate giggled at them and I nodded slowly. I had to laugh at their fascination with my brother, a fascination I did not understand at all.
"Ok, we are definitely coming!" Jenna declared.
I gave an awkward smile and turned to face the front of the classroom."Oliver!" Kate shouted as she spotted the mass of blonde hair by the door as he entered. His green eyes caught her eyes and they sparkled as his face lit up with a huge smile. They really do love each other. I grinned as he came towards us and sat next to Kate, my heart warm from seeing the love.
