Chapter 34

I had been awoken early in the morning by the noisy alarm over the intercom. How I had slept through it yesterday is a wonder. The sound was an unbearable tone that was set at the same times, twice a day, to indicate the start and the end of the work day.

I was to meet Malakai at the elevator in fifteen minutes. I took the quickest shower of my life, changed into some easy workout clothes, and threw my hair up into one of the messiest buns. I left the dorms. I shoved my way through people walking in both directions, most of them heading for the stairs.

"Good morning," Malakai said awfully cheerful.

"Morning." I followed behind him.

"You are not a morning person." His grey eyes sparkled as we moved upward.

"Never have been," I grumbled.

Everyone stepped out onto the fourth floor and headed towards the lines to get their food. "Do I have to eat?" My stomach churned as the smells invaded my nostrils. My nerves were rattling and I didn't think I'd be able to hold any of it down.

"Atrix's orders. He can't train you if you don't have any energy. Go sit down I'll bring it to you." I left Malakai in line and found an empty table.

The cafeteria was filling up. I watched the different groups interact with each other. They looked so normal. It's like they had completely forgotten why we were here to begin with. I hope one day I could be like that. I don't think it would be possible for me to forget. I could never forget why I was here.

Malakai slid the food in front of me and I kindly thanked him. Two more trays clashed into mine. Zane sat beside me and directly across was Addax. Everyone seemed well adjusted to this schedule. I expected I'd adjust in a few weeks' time. Right now, I struggled to keep my eyes open and alert.

"Blaize!" I looked in several directions searching for the voice who called me.

"Yeah?"

"Zane asked if you were nervous to start training." His eyebrows shifted signifying that I should respond to Zane. I knew what he was hinting at and no matter how many times I told Malakai I loved Felix, he refused to stop with the perpetual badgering.

"Sorry I'm just tired. I don't know how you guys survive like this." I tried my best to stay alert.

"It's definitely not easy, and after training starts it'll get even harder. Once you get past those weeks you'll be fine," Addax reassured me while putting a spoonful of the unrecognizable food in her mouth.

"You need to eat, otherwise Atrix won't be too happy with me," Malakai ordered.

"Now Atrix has control over what I put in my body? What happened to freedom?"

"Ha ha very funny. Now eat." Finally I complied deciding there was no way around Malakai. He was nearly as stubborn as me and as bossy as his brother. Perhaps that was the reason we were so compatible.

Mindless chatter was exchanged among us. I participated for the most part and got to know Zane and Addax better. I grew fond of them over the course of thirty minutes and was happy to know we had each other's backs. The Voyants were like a family, and at first I wasn't sure how I'd fit in, but they greeted me with open arms and minds. Now I knew for sure that I had a place here.

"What's Felix like?" Addax had randomly asked.

"Serious." That was the best word to describe him. That's how I'd always known Felix. The memories before Bliss were vague and slowly crumbling.
