(two days later)
Dawn's POV
After another full day of walking, the sun began to set. They took shelter in a small cave that ended ten feet away from the entrance. Sky put down a torch as the stars began to appear, and Dawn helped Jason to block the entrance with some dirt. They all sat down and ate some food without speaking to each other, because there was nothing to say.
They all knew that they were getting nowhere. They had been following the three pairs of pawprints for three days, and it seemed unlikely that three wolves could travel that far while keeping Deadlox imprisoned or by dragging him along. They surely would become tired at some point, but the tracks they were following showed no signs that the animals had ever stopped. Finally, Sky spoke up.
"I know that we haven't gotten anywhere so far, but we'll follow the tracks for one more day and then- then we should probably start over. These pawprints don't seem to be getting us anywhere," he said.
No one argued, they knew he was right. They just set up their beds in silence and got into them quietly. But Dawn was worried. What had happened to the old Sky? He was usually full of emotion and energy, and never really serious about anything. It used to annoy her, but now she noticed it was something she couldn't live without.
She was the last to get into her bed. She took off her armor and removed the torch from the wall, and then she collapsed into her blankets. She pulled the covers up, and lay there in silence for a while. The footfalls of the hostile mobs above kept her awake. It seemed to keep the others up too; she did not hear them breathing heavily.
But everyone sat up as they heard the sound of a skeleton being attacked. They heard the scream of a provoked enderman, and the sound of quickened footsteps as the enderman was killed.
"What the hell is going on up there?" asked Jason.
"I don't know, but the mobs aren't enjoying it," said Dawn.
Sky got out of bed and placed the torch back on the wall. He held his hand up to signal silence, and everything was completely quiet. The mobs had fled from whatever attacked them.
Then an unmistakable noise sent shivers up all of their spines. The sound of a dozen wolves howling echoed into the night.
