Stardust's POV
"This is taking so long..." Stardust muttered to himself. He was becoming impatient. The pack was going way too slowly! At this rate, they would never catch Deadlox, and he would never get his revenge.
He quickened his pace, and trotted up next to Katelin. "We're not going fast enough," he growled in her ear. "Don't you see how faint his scent is? We need to go faster!"
Katelin stopped and turned on him angrily. "I am the alpha of this pack, and you do not command me," she barked. "I command you, whether you like it or not, and we are going as fast as we can! Can't you see how tired Cat is?"
Stardust took a glance at the tan she-wolf. Cat was laying on her side, breathing heavily. Her pups were bounding around her with no lack of energy. She did look quite tired, and he realized how hard it must be for her to keep a steady pace while she had three growing pups to feed.
"I see your point," Stardust said. "But I have an idea. Why don't we let the rest of the pack rest here for a bit and eat, while I follow the scent trail and attack him? I still have plenty of energy left."
Katelin cocked her head to one side as if she was thinking. Stardust knew that she would probably agree. Even though Deadlox had "led" the Twoleggeds to kill her mate, she knew she had to do what was best for the pack.
Besides, his plan was larger than she knew. If he was allowed to go up ahead and face Deadlox alone, everything would be so much easier. He had recently realized that if the entire pack was there when they attacked him, he might not get to Deadlox fast enough. He felt that he had to be the one to kill the brown-furred traitor.
"Well, the pack does need to rest..." she considered. "But what if he has allies? It would be hard for you to face more than one wolf alone."
Ha, Stardust thought to himself. It would be easy enough. I'm one of the strongest wolves this forest will ever see!
"You should take another wolf with you," Katelin said. "How about Rishka? She seems to be quite fit, and you would make a great team. She's quick, and you're strong. Together, you would have it all."
"But-" Stardust stammered. Why did it have to be Rishka? She was such good friends with Hailey! Surely she would be suspicious when they met up with them.
"But- I don't think-"
"That's an order, Stardust," Katelin said with a dismissive tone to her voice.
Stardust sighed. He would have to think of a way to get Rishka off of his tail, and fast. He looked around, and saw her near Dwinn. He began to walk in her direction silently.
Rishka's POV
Her mother, Dwinn, sat alone on the other side of the clearing, her head tilted up to the sky as if she was deep in thought.
Rishka just had to find out why Dwinn had abandoned her and her siblings at birth. She noticed that her mother usually sat near her, but never said anything. She probably felt very close to Rishka since she was the only pup she had left.
Rishka began to walk over to Dwinn. She noticed how her fur was a speckled dark gray, black and white. The colors were so familiar to her, now that she knew who they were passed to. She had white fur, her sister, Shadow, had black fur, and Cinder inherited the dark gray. There was no doubt that they were all kin.
But Rishka was not sure how she felt about them. Shadow was dead, and she would never get to meet her. And it was all Cinder's fault! She knew she didn't want to meet a wolf who had murdered his own sister. Her father was gone, hopefully never to return. That left only Dwinn to ask about her mysterious past.
