Chapter 25

Hailey's POV

With Nikki and Deadlox on either side of her, Hailey ran through the forest. With the sun flashing through the trees and the wind in her fur, she felt truly free for once.

She and Nikki had to use all if their energy to keep up with Deadlox. He was swifter than most wolves, and he found pride in that.

"Do you think we can rest for a bit?" Nikki panted. Hailey was grateful that she had spoken up. Both of the she-wolves were exhausted.

"Deadlox," Hailey said, "you know that you are faster than us, right? Can you slow down next time?"

Deadlox rolled his eyes and slowed his pace, coming to a stop at the edge of a tangle of bushes.

The three wolves settled in the shade of a tree, and Hailey sniffed the grass. Where were they even going? They didn't have the slightest idea where to begin.

All of a sudden, Deadlox sprang to hos feet.

"Do you hear that?" he growled.

Hailey and Nikki shoved their ears foward, listening for the slightest trace of a sound. Hailey thought she sensed the sound of footsteps.

Nikki flattened herself to the ground. She had heard it too. Hailey laid her ears back and her fur stood on end. Had the pack found them?

Out of the brush, a small, dark gray wolf sprang. None of the others had ever seen it before. The wolf looked as if it was on the brink of starvation, it was so thin. It assumed an dominant posture and advanced towards them, teeth bared and growling. Deadlox stepped in front of him, guarding his friends.

"Who are you? This is our territory! Get out of here!" he lied, trying to protect his Hailey and Nikki.

"Yeah, right! Make me!" the gray wolf snarled.

Now it was Deadlox who stalked towards him. Nikki let out a startled bark as the wolf lunged towards him.
