Nikki's POV
Deadlox ducked as the gray wolf lunged. He slowly turned around, growling. The gray wolf began to circle him, looking for a chance to attack.
That chance never came. Deadlox snapped at the wolf's neck and managed to draw blood, but it gave the wolf a moment to strike. It jumped over him and whirled around, biting Deadlox's leg.
Deadlox barked sharply and shook the wolf off, turning around and slashing at it with his claws. He tore a gash across the wolf's flank. The grass around them was splattered with blood.
The other wolf took a shaky breath and collapsed.
Deadlox limped over to the wolf and sniffed him. It remained limp, but Nikki wasn't reassured.
It's a trap!
She was about to say these words out loud when the gray wolf leaped up and pinned Deadlox to the ground. But surprisingly, the wolf didn't strike. It just began to smile.
"You are a good fighter," the wolf said. "You just need a strategy."
The gray wolf jumped off of Deadlox and turned his head, examining his wound.
"My name is Cinder," he said.
Deadlox, Nikki and Hailey were having a hard time warming up to this stranger. He had attacked them, and Nikki was the least trusting of the three.
"Who are you?" she said, angry at him for hurting Deadlox.
"I already told you," the wolf said. "My name is Cinder."
"Where did you come from?" Hailey asked.
"I was driven out if the pack that you three used to call home," Cinder said with a sigh. "They had believed me to be a traitor."
"But why?" Nikki said, bewildered.
"A pup was killed, and I was framed for it. It made no sense! She was my sister. Why would I kill her?"
"You seem pretty bloodthirsty to me," Deadlox said, licking his wounded leg.
"Shut up," Cinder barked.
"Who was your mother? And your sister?" Nikki asked. She had so many questions.
"My sister's name was Shadow. But I think you may know my mother," Cinder said. "I can smell her on you."
Hailey watched as Cinder sat down in the grass, looking at his paws.
"My mother's name was Dwinn. I had no idea she was still alive."
