Chapter 21

Deadlox's POV

Him, Nikki and Hailey continued to run until Sky, Dawn and Jason's footsteps grew faint behind them. The dove under a small tree, panting and gasping for breath. They collapsed on the ground, and when they caught their breath they stood up again.

Sky and everyone else were definitely not following them anymore. They came out from under the tree and began to walk in the opposite direction of the pack. They would not be welcome there after refusing to fight. But Deadlox began to think- why didn't Nikki and Hailey fight?

(a few hours later)

The sun was beginning to set, and they found a small clearing near a pond. They laid down to rest, and they all looked around. They were sheltered from the view of mobs. Nikki stood up and walked towards the pond. She bent down and began to take a drink. Deadlox walked up to her, and she sighed. He playfully cuffed her, and they both smiled.

They both laid down next to Hailey. She smiled at them. No one spoke for a long time, because what was there to say? They all were outcasts, lone wolves once again.

"Guys- I want to ask you something," Deadlox said after a few minutes.

"Go ahead, then," Hailey said.

"Well- why didn't you two fight back there? I mean, it was your pack."

"Well, why didn't you fight?" Nikki said.

"It's complicated, Nikki," Deadlox said with a sigh.

"Well, our reason is complicated too," Hailey said.

The two she-wolves he had come to be such good friends with looked at each other. Nikki looked surprised, and Hailey nodded sadly.

"Deadlox, we have to tell you something," Hailey said in a barely audible whisper. "We were once humans too."

"W-what? How do you know?" Deadlox said.

"We used to be recruits, and we knew you," Nikki said. "When you told Hailey your name, we understood what happened immediately. Do you remember, three years ago when two recruits mysteriously vanished?"

"Actually, I do," Deadlox said.

"That was us," Hailey said. "One day, we were out fighting mobs and Nikki was left at only two hearts. We went into a cave and followed it, and it was surprisingly empty. Then, everything went black. We woke up on top of a hill, and we were wolves. We found that pack, and we have been living there ever since. The reason we didn't fight is because we didn't want to hurt Sky or anyone, and I believe that's your reason too."

"Yeah, it is," Deadlox said. "Well, I just want to become human again."

"And so do we," Nikki said.

"Well, let's do it together," Hailey said. "It will be easier with more of us. We should start tomorrow morning."

Nikki and Deadlox both nodded. They nuzzled each other, and laid down together. Hailey yawned, and they fell asleep almost instantly.
