Deadlox's POV
With Cinder, Hailey, and Nikki in front of him, Deadlox followed them single file through the thick undergrowth. It was sunrise, and as wolves were nocturnal, he began to yawn. Dragging his paws, he looked at Cinder in front of him. The gray wolf wasn't that big, and painfully thin. Deadlox wondered how long it's been since he had eaten real food.
Cinder was only with them because Nikki and Hailey felt that it was only right to help him find his sister, Shadow. Hailey was particularly eager to assist him, and Nikki had kept glancing at her nervously as they agreed to help. Deadlox felt that they both knew something about her that he didn't.
He just realized that he hadn't eaten all day and night. He stopped in his tracks, and stifled another yawn. The others turned around, looking just as tired as he was.
"Do you guys want to rest?" he barked.
Nikki didn't even wait for an answer, she just laid down on the spot. Hailey just chuckled quietly and nodded. Cinder yawned and laid down awkwardly.
"You know," Hailey began, "we were waiting for you to say that. You are in charge, anyway."
She sat down under a tree, and buried her muzzle in her paws. Deadlox slowly padded over to Nikki. He sat down next to her relaxed form, wondering if she was asleep. He ran his muzzle through her fur, and she smiled as best as a wolf could.
"I can never fall asleep in bright light," Nikki said. "You know-" she began to whisper, "I'm still used to my human schedule."
"Well, you should try to rest a bit," Deadlox said. "I'm guessing were all hungry, and the stuff I hunted while I was alone won't be enough to feed four starving wolves. You're gonna have to teach me how to hunt bigger stuff."
"If we all hunt together, we'll be able to kill a whole entire horse. And if you don't think that's enough, I don't know what is," she replied.
"But- but how do you hunt? I just don't want to ruin it..."
"Listen Deadlox, I love you, but you can be stupid at times. You will never ruin anything. You're too perfect for that. Besides, hunting flows through all wolves' blood. When you chase an animal with other wolves, everything becomes... flawless. It's hard to describe, but it's almost as if teamwork is carved into our bone."
"I case you haven't noticed, we used to be humans!" Deadlox barked quietly but angrily.
"That doesn't matter. Hailey and I did it, you can too."
"Is there anything I need to know? Or do I just wing it?"
"Just let yourself go, and everything will just flow together perfectly."
Deadlox nodded, but he still felt unsure. 'Let yourself go?' He wasn't even aware that he was holding onto himself.
Nikki noticed his confusion, and she put her paw on his.
"You'll know it when you feel it," she said, and nuzzled him affectionately.
"I sure hope so," he mumbled, and he rested his head on her back. The dew on the grass was cold, but Nikki kept him warm. Everything was perfect with her around.
"I love you, Nikki" he whispered.
"I love you too, Deadlox."
And with that, he drifted off to sleep.
(a few hours later)
"So how do we do this?"
All four of them were in the bushes at the edge of the forest, stalking a white horse quietly. Deadlox still had no idea what to do. Both Hailey and Nikki had tried to reassure him that everything would be fine, but doubt and confusion still filled his mind.
