"This is where we divide." Lauren says once all the initiates have jumped off the roof. "The Dauntless-born initiates are with me. I assume you don't need a tour of the place." She smiles at the Dauntless-borns- to me it seems more like she's baring her teeth- and motions for them to follow her. Only nine initiates remain with me once they leave- one Abnegation, no Amity, three Erudite, and five Candor. I address the transfers once the Dauntless-born have gone.
"Most of the time I work in the control room, but for the next few weeks, I am your instructor," I say, "My name is Four."
A Candor transfer with dark hair and skin asks, "Four? Like the number?"
"Yes, is there a problem?" She whips her head back and forth. "Good. We're about to go into the Pit, which you will someday learn to love. It-"
"The Pit? Clever name." The girl snickers, interrupting me once again.
I walk up to her and lean my face close to hers, narrowing my eyes. For a second I just stand there, knowing that I've intimidated her already. "What's your name?" I ask quietly. I can feel the other transfers' eyes on me.
"Christina." She squeaks.
"Well Christina, if I wanted to put up with Candor smart mouthes, I would've joined their faction," I hiss. "The first lesson you will learn from me is to keep your mouth shut. Got that?" She nods, and I turn away from her and lead the now-silent initiates to the Chasm.
"What a jerk." I hear Christina mumble behind me.
"I guess he doesn't like to be laughed at." I hear Tris's quiet voice reply behind me. I feel my mouth curl up into a smile. Damn right, I think.
