Scene: Pre-serum Steve has a crush on you.
Steve's P.O.V
*****There she was. She was walking in front of the main entrance to the diner, passing the doors with her friend at her side. The wind blew her perfect hair, while her perfect eyes sparkled, and her perfect laugh echoed across the street as her perfect legs strutted to the post I was leaning on...
Wait, that meant she was heading towards me!
I blushed as I anxiously tried to hide behind the thin rod of a post. I knew I was skinny, but apparently not skinny enough...
"Hi, Steve!"
Dang it.
"Uh, hi (Y/N)." Her friend eyed me up and down disapprovingly, obviously disappointed. (Y/N) only beamed at me, which made my chest swell. "Whatcha doin' out here in the cold? Are you waiting on your friend, Barnes?"
I noted how she called me by my first name, but not Bucky. It made me want to gush out smiling. My cheeks settled for turning pink.
"Well, yeah. Bucky said he'd meet me in a jiffy, but he's running a bit late." She continued to smile at me for a bit longer, her eyes beginning to sparkle again. "Why don't we come in with you? We could keep you company while you're waitin' for 'im."
My heart dropped to my stomach. Did my ears deceive me? Was I dreaming, or did the girl of my dreams just ask if she could go in and sit at a diner with me? A felt a hand clap on my shoulder. "Of course you can." I turned to see Bucky with a cheeky grin on his face. "Well, since I'm now here, you could just join us for dinner."
(Y/N)'s friend was now smiling since she actually had somebody to flirt with, and (Y/N) was smiling at me. I could tell I was in for something tonight.
*****
"So I told 'im, 'Buddy, you practically walked straight up to the wall and asked it to hit ya!'" (Y/N)'s friend laughed loudly as Bucky finished telling of one of my many misadventures with bullies. I sipped on my shake and snuck a glance at the girl sitting across from me. I was surprised to see that (Y/N) was already staring back. "I'm sorry." She said quietly.Bucky and the other girl were on the inside of the booth and flirting loudly, so I assumed they couldn't hear us. "For what?" I asked, smiling. "That those guys are so mean to you. I just can't believe it. You're a sweet gentleman with a good heart. I don't know how anyone could possibly would want to hurt that handsome face of yours."
The straw dropped from my hanging jaw. My searching eyes took in all of her: her perfect curls framing her beautiful face, her wide eyes that were always bright with passion, her tantalizing lips... I shook my head. That wasn't the point. (Y/N) was kind and endearing. She put others before herself and always cared about people's feelings. She was intelligent and unique. She always knew what to say and what to do. She was... amazing. I don't think I'd ever met anyone quite like her.
"Well, I am pretty stubborn and scrawny-" She cut me off. "That's just it! They don't see through that. You don't either. You are so much more than that, Steve Rogers. You have more kindness and integrity in your little finger than most do in their whole being. Why does it take muscles and height for anyone else to see that?
"I don't care what a man's record for weight-lifting is or if he made the basketball team. I want a man who has the courage to stand up for what he believes in, and to have the basic conscience to treat others with respect. And Steve Rogers, if that man isn't you then God above will strike me where I stand!" And with a short huff, she stood up and walked briskly to the ladies' room.
My gaze followed her until I heard Bucky clear his throat. I turned to him and he was... smirking. He raised a mischievous eyebrow at me as he spoke. "I propose we head back to your place, Steve. It'll be just before we drop the dames off at their lovely homes." (Y/N) had come out and sat down and her friend was giggling at Bucky's wink in her direction.
*****
As we got back to my apartment, Bucky and the other girl were consumed in conversation with each other. (Y/N) and I sat awkwardly on the couch. On the walk up, I finally figured out what (Y/N)'s whole rant meant, especially the last part, but she appeared distressed, so I let her have her space. Now there was only room for space. She was fiddling with a twine bracelet on her wrist while I was trying to look everywhere except for where she was sitting.Eventually, Bucky's girl had to use the restroom, so he was left to acknowledge our presence. His smirk returned and I eyed him warily. "(Y/N), have you seen Steve's closets? They're surprisingly big for the size of this place." I stared at him in confusion.
"What are you doing?" I mouthed at him. "Trust me." He mouthed back. "No, I haven't." She replied simply, still staring at her bracelet. "Yeah, Steve. Why don't you show her one of the closets. You can be a proper gentleman and actually hang up her coat." Bucky egged me. I shrugged and sighed as I led (Y/N) over to the main closet, which wasn't close to halfway full since I barely had anything to put in the large space.
"See, it's pretty big. You could fit a couple people in there comfortably..." Bucky's voice trailed off, and before I knew it, (Y/N) and I were being shoved into the dark space.
(Y/N) had landed on top of me as Bucky shut the door. "James Buchanan Barnes, you let us out of here right now or I'll-" "I'm not letting either of you out until you kiss!"
"W-what?" (Y/N) asked. She was beginning to pant. I had completely forgotten that she was claustrophobic. I remembered when the three of us were younger and (Y/N) had been locked in a small classroom in school by some snobby girls. It resulted in her hugging us outside and Bucky and I being written up for vandalizing a classroom door.
"Bucky! (Y/N)'s claustrophobic! You have to let her out!" In the faint light from the door, I could see her eyes were squinted in fear and she was beginning to hyperventilate. "Bucky, I don't !" I warned him. "I can't! I'm not letting you out until you kiss!" I couldn't hear an ounce of concern in his voice. I knew that he had made up his stupid, stubborn mind.
I turned to her and my heart broke. She had her arms wrapped around her knees and was rocking back and forth swiftly with her eyes still closed. Her breathing was so shallow I was convinced that she was beginning to have a seizure. "(Y/N), I'm going to kiss you. I-I'm going to kiss you now."
I leaned forward and cupped my hand behind her ear. I could feel her immediately tense, but then she eased. I stared at her fluttering eyelids and lashes, before my gaze drifted down to her lips. The lips I had dreamed of since I was seven, before I even knew what kissing was.
I sound like a gushing lunatic.
Before I could have a second thought, I leaned in and kissed her. I was in heaven. Her soft lips moved against mine and I felt like flying. She brought one of her hands up to the back of my neck and her fingers wove through my hair.
I heard the door open. "Are you guys- Woah!" And the door was shut again. We both chuckled as we broke for air. (Y/N) shyly tucked a price of hair behind her ear. "So, what do we do know?" I shrugged. "We could kiss again." She laughed. "Okay, Steve Rogers. If you want it that badly, you'll have to catch me." She popped up and ran out of the closet.
I proceeded to chase her, and when I caught her, I made a promise to myself to never let go. I guess you could say I found a fool-proof way of dealing with her claustrophobia. It was pretty effective, for the both of us.
