(Thank you guys so much for the feedback on my last A/N! Also, pretend Civil War doesn't exist for this.)
Why did you join the Avengers team in the first place?
Was it because of the chance to work with Earth's Mightiest Heroes?
Or maybe it was the fame and glory of saving the world.
It could also have been the monthly check with enough zeroes to make your eyes bulge, even without the injury compensation. (It's almost worth the pain.)
But, it was most certainly not because of the psychotic super villains that wreaked havoc on your body and mind.
Like the one you were battling right now. It was a man with Wanda's powers, except his were a lot more powerful. He made anyone's worst fears real. He had been another one of HYDRA's "projects". And he specifically liked to mess with you.
You were panting as you avoided him. If you got close enough, he could tamper with your mind.
Steve, Tony, Nat, Clint, Sam, Wanda, and Bucky were all fighting with you. Scott Lang, your "significant other" was being a wimp. Or in other words, he had been injured on the last mission, so he was home alone.
You heard a grunt beside you and saw Steve ducking behind his shield before a ray of energy flew over him.
"Where's Wanda?" You asked.
"She's trying to get close. We need to keep him distracted."
You all were outside an abandoned warehouse, with rusty shipping containers stacked outside on the cracked parking lot.
You nodded as you did the calculations. He seemed to have a certain perimeter of how far his powers could reach. If you stayed outside of that, you could distract him well enough.
"Hey, ugly!" You shouted as you stepped outward from behind the maroon shipping container.
The scruffy bald man turned to you, his eyes glowing red.
You fired two shots at him, missing on purpose. He began to... laugh?
"You are so adorably weak. Your petty attempts to destroy me will all fail."
You saw Wanda sneaking up behind him, about seven feet away. She nodded quickly to you. Just about everyone on the team were fighting their own fears: from giant spiders to Nick Fury.
Keep going.
"Well, you still are pretty ugly. I mean, why create nightmares when you could make people wet their pants just by looking at you? Also, do you have trouble looking in a mirror? I hear if you're ugly enough, they break."
He growled. "THAT'S ENOUGH."
Suddenly, a red beam flew out and a figure formed from it.
Your eyes widened and you froze once you recognized what it was.
"No. Nononononononono. Holy shi-"
The clown let out maniac laughter as lightning cracked across the sky and rain began to fall.
He had overdrawn features, like the Joker. His eyes were pitch black and his fingers were horrifically elongated. His "costume" was torn and bloody with gory somethings spilling out of the shreds. The rain was beginning to pour.
"Aw heck naw!"
The clown laughed and began chasing you, a squinky-toy-thing in his hand.
The telepathic man was laughing now too, too busy to notice Wanda standing just behind him. The nightmare cornered you against a container, a sinister grin overtaking his features.
"Why don't you smile more? Right now, YOU. LOOK. TERRIFIED."
He squeezed the toy, spraying a mix of blood and glitter all over you.
Then, you heard a loud shriek. You turned to see Wanda with a hand on the villain's head. The man slowly sunk into unconsciousness.
Soon, all the nightmares started to poof- disappear.
Finally, the clown disappeared.
You looked down to see that the rain had washed most of the blood away, but the glitter stuck like super glue.
"(Y/N)!" Steve ran over to you. "Are you okay?"
You nodded, sighing.
"Yeah, I just want to go home."
He chuckled.
"Me too."
•••••
You knocked on the door, severely angry and overwhelmed. You just had to face a freakin' demented clown. You hadn't really been afraid of them since you were nine and the one from your birthday party got arrested a month later from a seriously heinous crime.
You opened the door to your home to see Scott on the couch, watching The Perks of Being a Wallflower.
His gaze shot up to you and he smiled, before it turned to a resisted smirk.
"Why are you wet? And-"
"Don't you dare-"
"-Covered in glitter?"
You groaned as you plopped down on the couch next to him. He immediately wrapped an arm around you.
"Long story short: I hate clowns."
He laughed as he kissed the crown of your head.
"That's too bad."
"What? Why?"
"Well, a year's rolled around and Maggie is finally letting me throw a party for Cassie."
"And?"
"And Cassie just so happens to- uh, like clowns." His voice faded off a bit.
You groaned again and wiped your eyes.
"How many?"
"Two."
"Okay, I can deal with that."
He kissed you again, harder this time. When he broke away, he was beaming.
"Thank you so much. I promise I'll make it up to you."
"Yeah, yeah. I have got to have a shower. I'm gonna go to bed after that. G'night."
You stood up and left him to the rest of his movie.
He whispered another silent thank you, to whoever let him have a wonderfully strong and amazing person in his life like you.
Someone that stayed.
