Scene: Steve and Tony are butt faces. (Basically)
"You, (Y/F/N), are very annoying." Tony stated as you pleaded for him to join you in a game of tag. "C'mon, Tony! Steve's playing!" Steve passed you through the lab and ruffled your hair. "Uh, no I'm not. But, nice try."
"Please! I'm so bored, I might just jump off the building." Tony didn't even blink before he replied, "Be my guest." You scoffed and ran up to your room. Having the ability to freeze time didn't help boredom at all. In fact, it did the opposite of help the ever-lasting idleness.
You snapped your fingers and sighed. Out your window, everyone on the sidewalk froze. The birds sat still in the sky while the dog was a statue next to the fire hydrant. You stood up and walked back down to the lab. Tony was sitting at the microscope, one eye peering in and one hand writing on a paper simultaneously. Steve was snacking on a small bag of mini-blueberry muffins with one in his cheek and another in his hand, on its way in.
You were going to have some fun. First, you took the muffin out of Steve's hand and replaced it with a paperweight. You then slid a Petri dish under Tony's hand and put a screwdriver in it instead of the pen. You finished off by drawing glasses on Steve and a unibrow on Tony with a marker.
You hid behind a desk and took a bite of the muffin. You then snapped your fingers and watched the chaos ensue.
Crunch.
"Ow!"
"Eck! What the-"
"Hahaha! Your face!"
"Um, have you seen yours?"
And in unison,
"(Y/N)!!!!!"
You tried to run away, but Steve caught you. "Now, why would you do this?" He had a hint of malice in his voice. "You guys wouldn't play with me." You had suddenly realized how much trouble you were in. The way Steve was looking at you and the way you could hear Tony's heavy breathing, you knew you'd done it.
"You don't know how much trouble you're in. Do you know how long I've been working? How many hours I've spent looking through that microscope, trying to figure out how that tiny particle could win wars and end pollution? It would be the biggest game changer-" He stopped himself.
"I have tolerated you enough. I thought, 'hey, it could be fun to have a young person, at least, younger than the rest of us, on this team. We could teach her so many things and she's supposedly extremely intelligent and mature, so what's the harm?' But, I was wrong. So very, very wrong. You have the mental capacity of a five-year-old! You can't understand the simplest things! Such as: leaving someone alone! Do you know how annoying it is to have someone constantly nagging for your attention? Do you? I could add that to the very long list of things you don't understand! Like when you're not wanted! Can't you see we don't want you here?"
Steve had let go of you a while ago, but you were frozen to the spot, shocked.
"Tony, that was harsh-" Steve started, but you found your voice and stopped him. "N-no, he's right. He's right Steve." A fat tear slid down your cheek. "He's a-absolutely right."
Pause.
Tony was frozen, his face in the middle of turning from furious to sympathetic. Steve was staring down at where you were, guilt written across his features. But you didn't notice.
Play.
Steve unfroze and stared at where you were just in his arms. "She's gone," he barely whispered. Tony's face dropped. "Look what you did! You vented out on her just because you were failing every experiment, and now she could be hundreds of miles away!"
"It's your fault too! I was busy with something important and you wouldn't play tag with her. You were eating muffins!" "Enough!" Natasha entered the room, having seen the whole thing. "We need to go find her and you two knuckleheads need to make it up to her. And I have a pretty good idea where she went."
*****
It was past dusk as the boys came upon it. Nat was sitting in the passenger seat as she directed them to the beautiful sight.
It was way out in the countryside, in a flat clearing with a clear sky above it. You were lying in the middle, watching the stars. When the boys came closer, they saw your tear-stained face and wet eyes and realized they had screwed up, really bad.
"(Y/N)?" You froze as they took a hesitant step forward. When you didn't answer or run away, they took it as an invitation to lie down with you. "We're really sorry. We never should have ignored you." Steve finished and turned to Tony, who was on the other side of you. "I-I'm sorry too. I shouldn't have yelled at you. Nothing I said was true. You have to know that."
"Sh." You silenced them with a wet smile. "While we would play tag, I wanted to show you guys what I just discovered. I can do something else with my power. Give me your hands."
They did as you said and you closed your eyes. When you opened them, they were both smiling at you. Around you, the trees had froze in the warm breeze, the crickets had stopped chirping, and Nat was still against the car. "Woah," Tony breathed. "You can say that again," Steve mused.
"So you can freeze time for others too?" Steve turned to you. "Yeah," you hummed.
*****
So Tony and Steve took you out to your favorite restaurant and gave their undivided attention to you. You guys talked and laughed the night away. As you were in the backseat, watching Tony and Steve playfully argue over who was better, you realized the best part of your new trick. It makes moments with them worth a whole lot more.
