Chapter Eight

Nicky steps into the attic, and my memories stop playing in my head. “Hey.” She smiles happily and stands across me.

“Light us up, Nicky.” She closes her eyes, concentrating.

Mwen consacrer dife sa a pouf e you sevi selam pou byen nan pwatik lan de plaisnace m. Sa a pou konnen si youn se koulye a pa pouvwa te deside patispipe noon pou ede m’nam travay mwen. Se konse mote l!”

Thankfully, Nicky had been teaching me Creole. (The majick she practiced had its roots based in Haiti.) Well, she taught me the translations. For example, the summoning of majick, which she just said, translates as the following.

‘I consecrate this majick to be used only for good in the practice of my craft. This tool is now by powers bound to aid me in my work. So may it be!’

First, she summoned air. “Lagrel tuterus, bo soley leve. Mwen knovoke pouvwa you ki nan syel. Preri windswept. Souf lavi. Kokenn torrent superssion confilis. Ak claret, pouvwa po Savoir. No evoke ou!!”

Translation: ‘Hail guardians of the east. I summon the powers of air. Windswept meadow, breath of life. Fantastic torrent removing strive. With clarity, the power to know. We evoke you!’

Next was south, fire. Nicky began the sacred Haitian prayer. “Lagrel gardiens de sid, mwen convoke pouvwa you kin nan dife. Soleil flanm dife, Lantes dife a. quickened batman ke nam renmen. Ak eneji, pouvwa sera. No evoke ou!

English: ‘Hail guardians of the south; I summon the powers of fire. Blazing flam, crackling fire. The quickened pulse of a heart’s desire. With energy, the power of will. We evoke you!’

Third was water. “Lagrel tuters bo soley kouche. Mwen knovoke pouvwa you ki nan dlo. Vas fenwa osyean. Pousie de la kap mouri grangou movement. Ak entwisyon an sentiment, pouvwa pou dare. Nou evoke ou!”

English: ‘Hail guardians of the west. I summon the powers of water. Rushing stream, vast, dark ocean. Poetry of the soul in motion. With intuition, feeling the power to dare, we evoke you!’

Almost done now. Time for earth. “Lagrel gadyen so bo no. nou knovlke pouvwa you ki sou late. Cavae de fenwa, kanpe woch. La celebration de vyann ak zo. Ak gres, pouvwa silans. No evoke ou!”

Translation: ‘Hail guardians of the north. We summon the powers of earth. Cave of darkness, standing stone. The celebration of flesh and bone. With stillness, the power of silence. We invoke you!”

Last but not least, finishing the spell is spirit. “TANKOU KONDISYON PIWO AN SE KONSA PI BA PASE COMME DANS SE KONSA SAN. KAT ZETWAI NAN PLAS SA A POU. KONBINE POU RELE SENKYEM LAN POU M. TISSUS ANSANM. POU FE SEK LA NET SOU TOUT PWEN.”

English: ‘AS ABOVE, SO BELOW. AS WITHINK SO WITHOUT. FOUR STARS IN THIS PLACE BE. COMBINED TO CALL THE FIFTH TO ME. CIRCUMFRENCE AND CENTER, WOVEN TOGETHER TO MAKE THE CIRCLE COMPLETE.”

And it was complete. The majick has been called.

“You ready, Looch?”

I gulped, as ready as I’ll lever be.
