Woosh.

Something black whistles over my head as I duck below it. I come back up, bringing my seraph blade and swiping at the claw. I am fighting a Raum demon. The others are dealing with demons of their own. For that second of being distracted, the Raum swipes at me with it's tongue, which is how it sees, and it's poisonous. At the last second I duck out of the way and roll. I throw my dagger, with a sapphire on the hilt, toward the demon. It flies straight and true. The demon collapses and begins to disappear. I grab the dagger before it disappears. Some demon poison got onto the blade and I wipe it on the flexible leather of my gear. Jace, Isabelle, and Alec run over.

"You okay?" Jace asks, knowing he wasn't there to help since he had problems of his own, which was his own demon. I nod. I have been a Shadowhunter for three months. It's the second quarter in school, and fall has come. Most of the leaves are gone and have blown away, but a few of the russet oranges, soft reds, and golds are still around. It's about 4:10 in the afternoon. These demons were prowling around at the school fields. I know that people have after school clubs, so we stay and watch for demons so we can protect mundanes. That and it's an excuse to move around

"We can go now. I think the demons are gone. We just killed four of them. I know demons are stupid, but they cannot be THAT stupid." I say, sheathing my weapons, my two seraph blades named Cassidy and Ithuriel. The first few students start to file out. "Okay, now we can definitely go." I state, eager to go back home.

Home is now the Institute. The Institute is a glorious Gothic looking church with delicate runes carved everywhere. It's a holy place for us Nephilim. I moved out when I first found out who I was, about three months ago. Now I have another family. Jace Wayland, Isabelle and Alec Lightwood, Hodge Starkweather, and their cat, Church. There I have been training to fight demons.

At first, when I first started to wear my gear, which consisted of all black, flexible, yet tough leather, ankle and wrist gauntlets, and several weapons threaded through my belts, my mundane friends were appalled. Since then, they have grown used to it. Last week, I wore my old mundane outfits, jeans and a polo shirt, a white one, with a couple of yellow and grey stripes, to school. They were just as surprised as the first day I came as a real Shadowhunter.

I have actually learned how to use glamour, which is how I can keep mundanes from seeing my weapons. Glamour is the process of which you bend reality to make mundanes see what you want them to see. They have also gotten used to my runes. They think they are not permanent, but I have been getting more questions about the scars that come with the runes once they fade.

We start walking away, sweaty, tired, and kind of drained. Back at the Institute, without saying anything, we go to our rooms and wipe off the blood, ichor, which is demon blood, and dirt from our bodies. We know that we will meet in the library once we were done to tell Hodge what happened. I dry off, throw my dirty clothes in my hamper and put new clothes on. With still wet hair, I walk out and stroll down the familiar halls of the Institute to the library, also known as Hodge's study, which he never leaves.

After we recount our battle, to our surprise, he has a confused look on his face. "I did not expect demons to be at a mundane school. I thought they would stay away. Raum demons aren't smart, that's true, but they know better than to go to a place with four Shadowhunters." During study hall, the three meet me in my class and we patrol until 4:30.

"Hodge, the fact that we met demons there wasn't unusual, we have been training for our whole lives for this." Jace says. "Well, some of us." He adds, for my sake, even though that was unnecessary. I know just as much as the others, Jace trained me. Since then, I have been quite literally leading a double life.
