"Who's that?" One of the sopranos ask. I go and sit down at my riser, ignoring her. Jace sits next to me, separating me from Lizanne.
"This is your choir? All girls?" He asks, looking at the girls who are in turn staring at him.
"Yes, the Mustang Men are our equivalent, all boys and all stupidity." I snicker. He isn't offended because he knows I'm talking about mundane boys. He gives a ghost of a smile.
"Now, stand up." Mr. Wheeler, the choir teacher orders.
Everyone stands. He scans the crowd and his eyes rest on Jace. "Who's this?" He asks. Now the entire crowd is staring at him and me. The girls shrug their shoulders, but continue to stare at him, trying not to drool. "Care to introduce us, Ariella?" He directs the question to me. I swallow, not used to being in the center of attention.
"This is Jace. My friend. He's visiting from another school, and I'm showing him around, taking him to my classes." I lie. I know if I said I came from the Institute with him, they would all freak out. He stops and takes a look at me.
"What happened?" He demands, looking at the gauze and scrapes. Damn. I think in my head. I forgot about those.
"I-I-" All eyes were now riveted on me. I hate this. As I'm struggling to find an answer, thankfully, Jace swoops in and saves me.
"She was biking and it hit some gravel, scratched her up real bad." He says. I glance over and my eyes say everything. Thank you. He subtly moves his head.
"How do you know?" Court asks, recognizing him.
"Wait. You're not her friend. You're her cousin!" She shouts. I turn red. Adri looks over and sees Jace in closer detail.
"Yeah. You're her cousin, he moved in about three months ago. We saw them in the park, one day." Crap! I forgot about that.
"Ok, yes he's my cousin. I just didn't want you guys to ask all the family questions." I reply lightly. I glance over and I can tell he forgot about that too.
"In answer to how I know, I was there. I was one that helped her back." Jace answers, matching my light tone.
"Ok. You're fine to hang out with us. Just don't cause trouble." He moves off the riser and to the side. And that's when I smelled it. Demon. A small minor one by the smell. As Mr. Wheeler's taking us through warmups, I take the chance and look at Jace. I make my nostrils flare, a signal to sniff the air. He takes a whiff and I can tell he smells it. He pulls out a dagger and creeps to the back, scanning for whatever is here.
A minute later, I hear a small scream, one that sounds like metal on metal, and he returns, wiping ichor off his dagger. Done. He mouths. I nod my head in thanks. For the rest of the class, no demons bother us, and as we were rehearsing our songs for the concert, I flick my gaze to him. He's leaning against the wall, his upper back supporting him and his legs crossed over each other.
His eyes are closed and he looks uninhibited. He's enjoying the music. I smile at the fact. I didn't know he loved music. I knew he likes it, but I didn't know how much. A lot apparently. The choir sits down and Jace's eyes open. "I see our guest liked the performance." Mr. Wheeler jokes and Jace smirks.
"I have always loved music, but mostly classical, or piano. I play. But I have never heard such lovely singing." He says.
Three fourths of the girls giggle at that. He catches their eyes and flashes another smirk. I shoot him a look. One that said, Quit it. Now. He sees it and gives me a crooked smile, and slowly winks. Some of the girls who apparently really like him glare at me. I roll my eyes and turn my head back to Mr. Wheeler. "Thank you for the comment, Jace. I'm glad you like this." He acknowledges him and goes back to the piano. Jace looks at the piano with envy almost. "Would you like to play something?" The teacher asks. He nods and calmly walk up. He sits down.
