"Dan, Timmy" Phil called out to his husband Dan and their eight year old son Timmy. "Where are you guys?"
"Hold on" he heard Dan's voice. "Seems like I lost my car keys. Can you dress him up while I look for the keys?"
It was a big day in the Lester household. It was Timmy's first ever piano recital in front of a thousands of people. Along with Timmy his dads were anxious too about the whole situation. Dan was particularly happy about his son's drawing towards the piano as it was something he played himself. It was actually how Timmy started playing the piano. He would sit at Dan's old one and play it. Soon his dads noticed that he was talented at it and that is how he started playing the piano.
"Yeah wait up" Phil said and went inside to find Dan bending over a mess and there was Timmy standing shirtless.
"Timmy come here" Phil said.
Timmy came up to Phil and Phil took the shirt and helped Timmy wear it and buttoned it. He couldn't help but notice a weary look on Timmy"s face which was far from his usual energetic self.
"Are you nervous, champ?" he asked.
"A little" Timmy said in his cute voice that Phil adored so much.
"A little huh" he said ruffling Timmy's hair.
Timmy gave him a toothy grin and Phil tickled Timmy.
"Well you have no reason to be I know you are gonna do great and remember it doesn't matter if you win. What matters is that you particapted" Phil said kissing Timmy's forehead.
Timmy nodded as Dan appeared carrying Timmy's bag and the car keys.
"Are you ready?" Dan asked Timmy.
"I just need to wear this" Timmy said showing him a bowtie.
"Okay. I will help you" Dan said kneeling down besides his son and fastening his bowtie. "Too tight?"
Timmy shook his head no.
"You look so smart Timmy" Dan said proudly. "Everybody is gonna look at you. Won't they Phil?"
Phil nodded smiling at his husband's words.
"And don't be nervous Tim. I know you are going to do great"
Tim nodded as Dan and Phil both engulfed him in a joint hug in an attempt to make him feel better. It was a family thing.
"Are you ready now?" Dan asked him.
"Yes dad" he said.
"Let's go then" Phil said grinning taking Timmy's hand while Dan took the another one.
They walked to the drive away and made Timmy sit on the backseat. Dan was driving the car.
"Dan" Phil whispered. "He is quite nervous"
"Yeah. I know" Dan said biting his lip. "What can we do?"
"I don't know" Phil said his hand on his temples. "Should we cancel?"
"No no no" Dan said. "It's a very special chance for our son. He can be a child prodigy Phil and we can't just cancel that"
"Does it really matter Dan?" Phil asked slightly disappointed in his husband.
"It's not all about success Phil" Dan explained. "I want him to be a confident person and if we let everything slide he would get habituated to it. I don't want that."
"I get your point Dan. But he is only eight. Do we really need to stress him out this much?"
"I just want him to go up on the stage and do his thing. He can mess it up and I would still be just as much proud of him. But I want him to not chicken out"
"Dads. What are you guys talking about?" Timmy said.
"Nothing honey" Phil answered sweetly.
After about half an hour Dan pulled up in front of the auditorium. There was still an hour left for the show to start. Dan parked the car and the family went it to be greeted by a blonde woman.
"Timothy Lester?" She asked.
Timmy nodded.
"Aw such a sweet kid" she said to his fathers.
"Thank you" said Dan and Phil together smiling.
"Now if you don't mind Timmy we have to go backstage now. Say goodbye to your dads"
Timmy ran up to them and Phil picked him up and hugged him and so did Dan before kissing his forehead.
"Good luck Timmy. Don't be nervous. We love you" Dan said.
"Thank you dads. I love you both" said Timmy before walking off with the blonde woman.
"I am so nervous for him" Dan said.
"Don't be" Phil said kissing Dan and then playing with his hair. "He is gonna be great"
"Yeah" Dan said intertwining his fingers with Phil.
The couple spent the rest of the time having a little bit of their own time which happened less these days as they had Timmy to take care off.
Soon people started coming in. The whole auditorium was full. Dan and Phil were in the middle tightly holding hands. Timmy was going to be the third performer.
The first two performances were amazing and Dan and Phil were very happy for the kids but with bated breath they waited for Timmy to come on stage.
The auditourim broke into a fit of applauses as little Timmy made his way to the grand piano but in the way he tripped himself and Dan tightened his grip around Phil's hand. Thankfully Timmy got on balance soon and sat on the stool. The auditourium was completely silent now and then Timmy started playing.
Nobody talked. Everybody was listening to the perfect rythmn of the little boy and that moment his father's knew that he had done it. With slightly moist eyes Dsn rested his head on Phil's shoulder watching his son play the piano so beautifully.
When Timmy finally finished the crowd erupted into a deafening applause but nobody clapped harder than Dan and Phil.
And they could hardly hold back their tears when Timmy started speaking.
This was for my dads who are the best dads anyone could ever have. I love them so much.
