Chapter Twelve

You hummed softly, sitting on the gate of the inner wall, pistol beside you. Chun-Yan giggled as she watched you. "I'm guessing someone is happy." The Chinese woman stated, looking down at you. You looked up with a grin.

"Chun-Yan... Of course I am. I've been here for a year-and-a-half. Johnathan is four-years-old, this place is thriving, the outer wall is almost complete! We have so many people, and we just keep growing! No one has died. Lovina birthed healthy twins, Donato and Camile, and Tina finally had her own baby girl, Susan. Feli is pregnant with Ludwig's child and Francis finally has someone on his eye; Madelyn. She's so sweet and kind, and a wonder she survived for three months on her own. Katyusha and Matthew finally hooked up, same with you and Ivan, and Anneliese had hers and Vash's baby last night! This place..." You trailed, looking around with a soft smile before continuing, "I know it will survive. I know that more generations are going to be raised safely within these walls."

The Chinese girl hummed and nodded, looking back over the wall. "I know that, too. Humankind will survive."

A whole year and a half you've been with these people. The group has grown and progressed so much, and you were proud to have been apart of all that. However, your only concern was Alice. She stopped stealing and sneaking out. She also wasn't 'sick' as often. It was like she knew we were onto her, so she stopped to regain trust. Also, even though you and Alfred had gotten so much closer, you haven't kissed him. You didn't want to ruin it again so you stayed away from kissing either him or Arthur.

"Hey, (Name)!" Kiku called from below you. You leaned back and looked down at Chun-Yan's brother. "Time to switch shifts! It's my turn." You smiled and nodded before practically jumping down the latter to switch with him. Sometimes, you felt bad for him. He didn't have his eye on anyone, and most other girls were taken already. He didn't have many places to look for a special girl, and neither did José.

You bid Kiku farewell before shoving your pistol back in its holster and wandering through the community. You hummed a tune as you looked around. Gilbert and Elizabeta were holding hands over the table as they spoke over lunch and Lovina monitored Feli and Lily holding her twins. Antonio and Ludwig were caring for the animals with Peter's and Johnathan's help, and Arthur was helping Katyusha, Natalya and Madelyn in the gardens and greenhouses while Francis followed Madelyn with his gaze. Your smile widened as you watched Ivan tending to his prized sunflowers and as Matthew played with Pepe and Lucy. Also, you noticed that Lucy was getting either over-fed, or she was starting to show in pregnancy.

"Aha!" A voice exclaimed from behind you. You turned to see Alice. The British girl grinned, hands on her hips. "I've been looking for you! Wanna go out on a scout? Neither of us have gone on one for a while, and I kinda want some action. We also need some more supplies."

A chuckle sounded from you. "I thought we cleared every building, but I guess it wouldn't hurt just to make sure. Why not? I'll go get some things ready, tell Ludwig, then we'll be off."

Alice shook her head with a grin. "Don't have to! I already talked to Ludwig. All you need is a weapon or two, and we're off!"

You passed through the unfinished wall with a grin. Just in less than a week, the wall would be finished. Then the gate could be put up.

Alice walked beside you, hand on her revolver. You shrugged off how eager she seemed, and followed her into the city. You scouted through three cleaned out grocery stores before avoiding a large group of Roamers to get into the hotel you had met Alfred by. Alice lead the way silently, lightly bouncing on her feet. Your brows furrowed as you watched her. She's up to something... You thought, placing your hand on your pistol.
