Chapter 16:A Miracle

I sighed and began walking home.Then,I changed my mind and decided to take Castaway to the forest and see how well Castaway could dodge and fly through the trees.I immediately jumped on Castaway.He snorted."Come on,Castaway.Let's see how well you can fly,"I said,tugging at the saddle gently with my good arm.Castaway beat his wings and flew into the air.We flew to the forest and landed in front of it.Castaway looked at it,then turned his head to give me a confused look.I patted his head."You just have to fly through the trees and avoid the fallen trees.You ready,boy?"I whispered.Castaway grunted and directed his gaze forward.I held on tightly to the saddle."One,two,three...GO!"I cried.Castaway flapped his wings and surged forth.

We weaved through some trees,with me almost slamming my head into branches.Then,we came to a tree with a large broken bough.I decided to fly over it."Castaway,up!"I commanded.Instead of flying up,Castaway dived.He flew under the bough."Castaway!Why'd you fly under?"I questioned after we dodged the bough.He grunted and pointed with his head to the broken bough.I looked at it,stared above it and then understood.There was a thick branch there.If we had flown over the bough,I would have been knocked off Castaway by the overhead branch.Castaway had just saved me from breaking another part of my body!I patted his head and stared at the branch again,thinking of the narrow escape.Castaway turned his head too,to look at me.I stroked his head silently.We both faced the front again.Then,I screamed louder than I had ever done before.

There were several trees just a few metres away from us,and we were about to crash into the trees!Castaway gave an alarmed roar and spread out his wings.Suddenly,he curled up like a ball around me.I felt his body crash into the trees.We rolled forward for quite a long time,then came to a stop.Castaway slowly uncurled,freeing me from him.I slowly got to my feet.I checked my left arm,which was still in bandages.It seemed okay.I looked at Castaway.He seemed alright too."Whew!That was wild,"I commented.Castaway got to his feet and licked my face.Laughing,I got on his back once again."Let's go,"I said.

Just as we were about to take off,a wild Deadly Nadder came flying towards us.It eyed us suspiciously.I slowly slid off Castaway's back.The Nadder immediately put up its spiky tail and shot spines at me.I dodged them narrowly and stared at it.I extended my hand towards it,then remembered that all dragons were hostile to me except Castaway.The Nadder was about to shoot at me again when Castaway roared at it.He growled softly and stood in front of me.The Nadder roared back at Castaway.He roared even louder until the Nadder began grunting softly.Castaway then got behind me and pushed me towards the Nadder.It turned its head to stare at me.I raised my hand and stretched it towards the Nadder.It grunted again and nosed my hand gently.I was taken aback.A dragon had actually trusted me!I had expected it to blast me with fire or something nasty like that.The Nadder flew off after a few seconds.I stared after it.Then,something pushed me from behind.I turned and stroked Castaway."Thanks,bud,"I whispered.I got onto his back and we flew home together.
