Chapter 28:The First Ingredient

Changewing Island was due east of Berk,and it was relatively far too.It took us all quite some time to get there.But at last,after a long flight,we touched down on the shores of Changewing Island."Time to get those 'stones of good-fortune',"Tuffnut rubbed his hands together in glee."Tuff,they're not 'stones of good-fortune',they're Changewing eggs,"Astrid reminded,gesturing to the glowing,multi-colored eggs nestled rather precariously on the branches of tall trees."And anyways,they aren't much luck at all,"Oliver pointed to the sky,eyes wide.We all looked up.A flock of Changewings were in the sky,flying over the trees and checking on the eggs,I assumed."Quick!Under the trees!"Hiccup ordered.We all darted under the trees,hoping fervently that the Changewings wouldn't spot any of us.Our dragons huddled together with us."Please don't come down,please don't come down,"I prayed silently,looking up with trepidation.

As soon as I thought that,however,the Changewings took an immediate dive and landed.They suddenly became invisible.I gulped.Hiccup began glancing around frantically.Then,he gave a shout."Everyone,dragons!".I climbed Frostbite and helped Cassie up before we shot up into the sky.We gathered in a close-group formation."Quick information about this dragon.It spits boiling acid,can camouflage with the surroundings and practically turn invisible.It can also hypnotise.Its only weakness is that it can't camouflage against the sky,"Hiccup explained."So let's get those dragons into the sky and have someone distract them while the rest hunt for the Nightroot plant,"Oliver suggested."Right.Toothless,warning shot,"Hiccup said.Toothless fired a plasma blast near where we had last seen the Changewings.There was a loud hiss,then a large flash of red coming at us."I'll distract them!You guys go get the Nightroot plant!"Oliver yelled.Fireproof let loose a series of blasts right at the Changewings.They fired acid back and began chasing Oliver.He flew off,leaving the rest of us to do what he had told us to do.

"The Nightroot plant is a rare,small,blackish plant with bright yellow leaves found in high places like mountains and cliffs,"Hiccup informed everyone.We all decided it was wise to scan the area from high up.From the skies,we looked around."I don't see anything,"Nevaeh remarked."Hmm...I have an idea,"Astrid piped up,"Since Stormfly is a Tracker Class dragon,she can try finding the plant by its smell,""Deathroar too,"Zack added.Hiccup gave his approval.Deathroar and Stormfly hovered for a while,trying to pick up the scent of the Nightroot.Suddenly,Deathroar zoomed off,Zack yelling as he went."I think he's got something!"he yelled to us.The rest of us chased after him.Stormfly must've picked up the scent as well,because she charged forward alongside Deathroar.They flew right across the island,occasionally snorting loudly at each other.

After a couple of minutes,both Deadly Nadders dived down and landed on a mountain.Stormfly scratched at the dirt ground before digging her claws in and burrowing into the ground.Deathroar helped.After Frostbite landed,I slid off his back and investigated the hole.A small,black plant with a few pathetic yellow leaves on its thin stem greeted me."They found it!"I announced to the others,carefully uprooting it.I placed it in my satchel."Let's go find Oliver and head for Snaptrapper Island.It's the closest island from here,"Nevaeh suggested.We mounted our dragons and flew off to search for Oliver.It was up to Deathroar and Stormfly again to track him down.They again sniffed the air,seeing if they could smell Oliver.After a minute,Stormfly spread her wings and flew off.Deathroar followed shortly after.For the second time that day,we followed the pair again.

"WHERE ARE YOU GUYS?!HELP!"a cry sounded from afar.It was definitely Oliver!Out of the blue,he soared up into the sky from a clump of trees below,a whole pack of Changewings chasing him like angry bees.Toothless shot a plasma blast at the pack,knocking some out of the sky."FLY AWAY FROM THE ISLAND!"Hiccup commanded.We retreated and obeyed.Occasionally,Frostbite turned to shoot at the Changewings to keep them from getting too close to Oliver.The rest defended him too.

We soon reached the edge of Changewing Island and flew out to sea.I turned.The Changewings no longer pursued us.They gave a warning roar and turned back.Oliver was paler than a viking spirit that came from Valhalla."If this...is what a dragon rider...feels like,I don't ever wanna be one,"he panted as he gasped for air after being frightened out of his life.I could've sworn that Hiccup was trying not to smile.

Now for Snaptrapper Island,one of the most feared islands in viking history...
