Chapter 17:Disabled Trainer

I had spent two-and-a-half weeks doing nothing but flying, doing chores and reading the Book of Dragons over and over again.Hiccup never came to see me about Castaway.Ever since Astrid had called Hiccup back to the Academy, they had completely shut themselves up and away from the rest of the world. They were hardly seen anywhere except the Academy. And nobody seemed to notice or care except me.

"I wonder what's so important that they need to be meeting in the Academy every day of the week,"I said to Castaway one day while I was flying over the Academy. The whole group seemed to be discussing something extremely serious.I finally found out what was so serious a couple of days later.

"Yannied!"Someone called out to me.I was busily mending Castaway's shed door one morning.I turned to see Astrid on Stormfly."Yannied!I need you to come with me!Hiccup wants to speak to you in the Academy right now,"Astrid informed.I raised my eyebrows and mounted Castaway.Astrid and I flew to the Academy together. We landed smoothly inside before the rest of the gang. They all looked serious, even the twins,so I knew it was REALLY serious.

"Yannied,we have called you here because of an extremely serious and urgent matter,"Hiccup began."We have heard of an ambush by Dagur the Deranged. He will be sailing here next week, and he will have a massive armada, bigger than any armada he's had before. He formed an alliance with an unknown tribe and promised them a Night Fury head if they agreed to fight alongside him.We need as much firepower as we can get to overthrow both tribes. So,our plan is to train as many dragons as we can to fight so we can defeat Dagur. We can't have people riding the dragons because it's too risky.Us six alone cannot train the dragons, and we need one more trainer. Will you help us?"Hiccup asked.I hesitated.Train dragons?Me?I was a little unsure of training dragons.Hiccup must've seen my face when I thought that.

"It's to save Berk,Yannied,"he added.I nodded my head."Okay,Yannied.Here are the basics of dragon training. You need to be patient, gentle and confident.Don't ever approach dangerous dragons like Changewings or Whispering Deaths,or mother dragons with their babies. If you really run out of options, try Terrible Terrors.Everyone, tame as many dragons as you can and tie a rope around their neck and have them follow you.If they start fighting, give them dragon nip.Meet back at the Academy by seven with your tamed dragons. Now go!We have no time to waste!"Hiccup instructed while giving me a handful of dragon nip.I filled my saddlebag with fishes, took a huge coil of rope lying nearby, mounted Castaway and flew off like the others.

Castaway and I soared high over Berk for a few minutes, looking for dragons.I finally noticed a Monstrous Nightmare and had Castaway fly down near it.I noticed that it was staring intently at a pond."It's trying to catch a fish!It must be hungry,"I muttered.I opened the saddlebag and got a fish."Castaway, stay,"I said.Castaway lay down obediently."Hey,boy,"I whistled a little. The Nightmare spotted me and growled.I held out the fish. The Nightmare flicked its gaze from me to the fish.It stopped growling and sniffed the fish warily.Without warning,it snatched the fish from my hand and wolfed the fish down in two bites.I extended my hand and looked away from the Monstrous Nightmare.I felt its scaly nose nuzzle into my palm.I grinned and fetched the rope.I tied some rope around the Nightmare's neck loosely and left some rope connected to the noose so I could lead the Nightmare with the rope.I mounted Castaway and flew into the air.I tugged on the Nightmare's 'lead' gently to get his attention. He looked at Castaway, then flapped his wings as well.We all flew together in the sky.

For the rest of the afternoon,I was flying all around Berk taming dragons and getting them to follow me.Some were extremely uncooperative. They wouldn't let me tie the rope round their necks. However, they all got along perfectly fine.Soon,I had around twenty dragons.I looked at the sun.It was sinking, and fast."It must be around six o'clock,"I said to myself. After a few minutes of pondering,I decided to get a few Terrible Terrors. They were accurate in firing and were sneaky. That would help, wouldn't it?I turned to my group of tamed dragons."Okay, troop!Let's fly for just a while more!"I shouted to them.I got on Castaway and pulled softly at their leads. They flapped their wings and rose into the air. After flying for a bit,I found a whole group of Terrible Terrors fighting over a few measly bits of fish.I landed near them and made Castaway watch over the herd of tamed dragons.I whistled loudly. The Terrible Terrors caught sight of me and began growling.I tossed them three fishes from my saddlebag. They gave a delighted grunt and pounced on the fish. After they ate,I extended my hand to each of them. They all cooperated well except for one, which flew off after nipping my finger.I tied rope around the Terrors' bodies and then had them follow the rest of the dragons as well.Castaway and I flew to the Academy, which was bursting full with dragons.Hiccup,Astrid and Snotlout were there with their dragons.Hiccup was busily scribbling on a piece of paper.I landed and whistled to Castaway.I pointed at the herd of dragons. He immediately grunted as if he knew what to do,which he did:guard the dragons.

I ran up to Hiccup."Yannied! You seem to have got quite a lot of dragons!Tell me how many of each dragon you have.I'll record them down on this piece of paper,"he said.I thought for a bit."Um,five Monstrous Nightmares, seven Deadly Nadders, four Hideous Zipplebacks, four Gronckles and seven Terrible Terrors,"I reported.Hiccup paused writing and raised his eyebrows."Terrible Terrors?I said if you run out of options,Yannied,"Hiccup reminded."But Hiccup, think about it!Terrible Terrors are accurate at firing shots. They are small and difficult to attack. They're sneaky and if they run out of shots, they can always nip the enemy. You know how fierce they bite!"I listed eagerly.Hiccup's face brightened."You know what, they could actually be quite powerful even in small packs! We'll take them!"Hiccup grinned, quickly noting down the number of Terrible Terrors I had.I walked off to organise my group of dragons and found Castaway dutifully keeping the dragons safe and stopping them from flying off.I stroked his head and looked at my 'army' of dragons. They all looked weary from flying.I quickly fetched a few baskets full of fish and fed all the dragons until they were contented. After waiting about until Fishlegs and the twins came back with their dragons,it was nearly nine in the evening.Hiccup finished writing down the number of dragons we all had gotten.

"Okay,so I have good news.We have 29 dragons from Astrid,27 from Yannied,26 from Snotlout,20 from Fishlegs and 16 from the twins. As for me,I have 28.In total,we have 146 dragons! If we get just a few more each,we'll have 200 soon. That'll be enough to fend off Dagur and the other tribe. So,tomorrow,we'll find some more dragons at Dragon's Island. Then,we'll begin the actual training. In the meantime, let's just keep the dragons in the Academy.I'll stay watch over them here. You guys go and rest,"Hiccup offered. We all headed off to our houses to rest after a long and tiring day.

And then I was woken up in the middle of the night with a blood-curdling scream.
