"Do you have your lunch money?"

"Yes."

"Cell phone-ONLY for emergencies?"

"Yes."

"Binder?"

"Mom, I'm not a child! I know what I need for school," I said swinging my backpack over my shoulder and got in the rental car. My mom had to run errands and didn't feel like paying for a bus or taxi to drive her around over the next few days.

"I'm just making sure you have what you need," my mother said getting inside and starting the engine. "Hey, seatbelt."

I rolled my eyes and buckled up. I know she meant well, but every time I started a new school she acted like this.

We began to drive to the school, and traffic wasn't as bad as I would have thought.

"Someone's calling you. Do you want me to answer it?" I asked digging in her purse for her phone.

"Yes please."

I found the phone and quickly put it up to my ear. "Hello?" No response. "Hello?" I tried again.

"May I speak to Kate Rhodes?" A deep voice said on the other line.

"She can't-oh shit!"

My mother screamed and slammed on breaks and her arm went slamming into my chest, and I grunted as I got the wind knocked out of me. Some kid was doing a trick on his skateboard went crashing into the street in front of us.

We both tried to calm down from the sudden shock. Her arm was still locked over my chest as a safety reflex.

"You know what I'll just call back later." The man hung up.

"Who was that?"

"No idea. Some guy."

She took the phone and glanced at it, but quickly shoved it back in her purse just as the kid stood up and walked away otherwise uninjured.

She began to drive again, but this time I could see and feel how cautious she was being.

We got to the school just as the bell rang, and we walked inside to the office to pick up my schedule. My mom had some kind of meeting with the principal, so once my schedule was in my hands I headed to the first class.

Music. There weren't actual desks, but mobile bleachers must be the choir room, I thought, and there were also unique paintings hanging all over the walls. As I looked at the students I realized that they were staring right back at me. It's great to be the new guy again, I thought.

"You must be Gunnar. Welcome to general music," a tall man with long ombré hair and a heavy beard spoke standing from behind a piano. As he approached me a strange look crossed his face. "I'm Mr. Leto. Why don't you introduce yourself to the class and tell us something about you." He smiled kindly gestured with his hand toward the class.

That's when I saw Moxxi. She had her long blonde hair tied in a messy bun, and her makeup was flawless. My heart pushed against my chest for a moment before I looked away and spoke. "I'm Gunnar, I moved here from Arizona, and I've lived in 6 different states."

"Oh, really? Is your family military?" Mr. Leto asked.

"No just... Very busy."

"I see. Well you may have a seat. Today we were going to go over the basic notes. Do you play an instrument?"

"Piano, guitar, violin, but my favorite are the drums."

The class began to murmur.
"Very interesting. Well we're glad to have you."
