"Antonio, Heather is here to see you," Jenna buzzed to the office.
"Great! Send her in!"
I looked over some papers as I waited for the young barista to enter. There was a knock on the door and I told them to come in.
"Heather, please come in and have a seat." I motioned to the chair in front of me, and she nervously took a seat. "How are you?" I asked giving her a smile.
"I'm alright I guess." She was fidgeting and avoided my gaze. She seemed intimidated by me.
"Heather this is just a review of how you feel about your training and the company, so there's nothing to be afraid of. I'm not going to fire you, and I'm not judging you on anything, okay?"
She nodded and finally looked at me.
"How is your experience so far?"
"It's been great. The customers are nice and my coworkers are helpful, so I can't complain."
"I'm glad everyone has been so helpful. Is there anything that you would change?"
She shook her head, "I really like it here. There's nothing I would change about it. Everything runs smoothly."
"Thank you, and thank you for your time Heather. You can get back to work." I stood to shake her hand and guided her out of the office.
"So how did the prom go for Gunnar?" I asked Jenna leaning on desk, but she still continued to stare blankly at her computer screen.
"Jen. Hello, earth to Jen." I waved my hand in front of her face, and she finally snapped out of her trance.
"I'm sorry. What is it?" She said looking at me, but it still seemed like she was distant.
"I asked how prom was for Gunnar."
"I imagine it was exactly how he planned it would be."
"Jenna, what's wrong? You seem like you're a million miles away today." I sat on the corner of her desk top facing her.
"I feel like a horrible parent. Instead of encouraging my son to practice abstinence and save himself for marriage, I practically gave him the okay to have sex in a hotel room."
"Jenna, that doesn't make you a bad parent. You've done a lot for Gunnar, and whether or not you see it you raised Gunnar to be a good kid, and it's not like he wants sex just because it's sex, he's in love with her."
"Wait so you knew?"
"Yes, but I also told him to talk to his parents first."
She released an exasperated sigh. I could tell she still didn't believe how good of a mother she really was. I placed my hand gently under her chin and brought her chocolate eyes to mine.
"Jenna, you taught him to love, and now days that's a lesson a lot of teenagers don't learn. It's something that I wish my parents had taught me growing up."
She took my hand and squeezed it with a wry smile. "Thank you."
I smiled at her. She was so beautiful, and all I've ever wanted was a woman like her. Strong, independent, but kind and loving, everything that I never had from my mother as a kid. Then there was the picture of Shannon on her desk reminding me that she belonged to him.
"Well, I guess I better be getting back to some paperwork-"
"So now you want to do your job," a familiar voice interrupted. I looked up to see dark ombré hair, large blue eyes, and a soft smile that I grew know and love over the years.
