"Three of his ribs are broken, there's a hairline fracture to his sternum, his shoulder is dislocated, and he suffered major blunt force trauma to his brain. I'm going to have to reset his shoulder and he's going to need surgery on his ribs," a female voice was saying urgently. "Get him to an emergency operating room stat! Do we have contact with the boy's parents yet?"
"We've gotten a hold of his mother," a man responded.
"Is he going to be okay?"
Coach? I tried opening my eyes to see him, but no matter what I did everything remained black. "What's going on? Why can't I see anything?" I asked.
"Sir, we need you to wait in the waiting room," the woman responded.
"But-"
"You're not his father are you?"
"No-"
"Then you need to wait in the waiting room."
Pain. I was in so much pain. Why haven't they given me any pain killers yet?
"Please can you give me something for pain?"
No response.
"I'm hurting! Please give me something!" It felt like my ribs and chest were on fire. "Someone help me! Please!"
"Gunnar!"
"Mom!" I smelled her favorite perfume followed by her gentle touch on my cheek.
"What happened to him?" Shannon's voice demanded.
"Some of his teammates got out of hand from what the coach was telling us. They pretty much attacked him."
Suddenly everything stopped moving. "What's going on?"
"Give him some anesthetics to make sure he stays under." The doctor ordered. "Ms. Rhodes this could be particularly hard to watch. You may want to wait outside. We'll be done in a few hours."
"Okay."
I could hear the tears in her voice. As they placed a mask over my mouth and nose. "No, please don't leave! I'm scared!" At that moment a door opened and shut. "Mom!"
This couldn't be real. I could hear and feel everything, but I couldn't see or speak apparently. "No. No. No! I can't be in a coma. I'm not in a coma. This is just one really fucked up horrible dream!"
I felt gentle hands grab my arm just above the elbow raising it slightly. "That hurts!" Suddenly I heard a cracking sound. "Aaahhh!" I was thrashing in pain, but on the bright side the pain in my shoulder subsided.
"Scalpel," the doctor said removing the hospital robe from me and raising my right arm.
"What do you need that for? You're seriously not going to-ahh! Fuck!" The scalpel went into my skin just at my back and around to my chest and back down around my back. I felt my skin being pulled back exposing my ribs.
"Get me forceps, a drill, and screws."
That's when I felt it. Hands grabbing the sensitive bones that were now exposed and in the open. It hurt like hell, but that was nothing.
The real pain started when she drilled into them. "Mom! Please make it stop!" I never felt so much pain. I wanted my mom. I didn't want to go through this alone. I felt a tear fall down my cheek as it grew unbearable.
I began to feel faint.
This was it.
The end.
