"You're a lucky man Mr. Bateman. The bullet didn't shatter so other than it hitting a vein, everything is good, and you're almost good to go. Here's your prescription. Now while on this medication no driving, don't operate heavy machinery, no drinking. Also this acts somewhat like a muscle relaxer, and it will make you sleepy, so take this once a day, preferably before you go to sleep. If you experience any nausea, migraines, vomiting, come see me immediately okay?"
I nodded. I'm sure she's used to people staring at her by now. I've always known that there were people with two different colored eyes, but I've never had the pleasure of meeting one until now, and I have to admit it was very attractive, especially on a woman like her. Full lips, hourglass figure, beautiful long hair.
"Good," she said smiling at me. "Now just one last check up and you'll be cleared to leave." She grabbed her blood pressure cuff from the wall and attached it to my arm.
I watched her as she moved expertly checking my blood pressure. "It's a little high, but that's to be expected after getting shot." She then took my hand and pressed her slender fingers to my pulse. She looked at her watch as she counted my heartbeat.
Her eyebrows slightly quirked as she recorded the data. "You have a very strong heart, Mr. Bateman. As long as you stay out of trouble, you'll live a very long life." Her eyes met mine, and she suddenly shied away.
Without thinking I grabbed her hand to bring her attention back to me. "What is that called?" I asked looking deep into her blue and brown eyes.
"Heterochromia. Some people find it disturbing, and others-"
"Think it's absolutely beautiful."
She blushed as I finished her sentence. "I was going to say interesting." She let her hair fall in her face covering her brown eye as she looked down at her clipboard, and I pushed it back behind her ear.
"Are you ashamed of it? And I'm not trying to be rude or offensive. I'm genuinely curious."
"No but some times it's hard to live with. I've had people refuse me as their doctor because they thought I was blind or simply because it wasn't normal." She looked up just as the sun shined into the room, lighting her eyes in the most beautiful way.
We stared at each other for a while before she turned away and tore off a piece of paper from her clipboard. "Well here's your ticket out of here, and I'll call you later on this week about getting a follow up appointment. If anything happens that's out of the ordinary, give us a call right away," she said handing me the piece of paper.
"Thank you Dr. Bennett." I stood and took the paper from her.
"Do you want to make it official? We can roll you out in a wheelchair."
I laughed which quickly turned into a pained grunt as pain shot through my torso.
"Sorry! I tend forget that sometimes it's not a good idea to make my patients laugh. Are you okay?"
"I'm fine, and I needed a laugh." I smiled at her.
"Well take care Mr. Bateman, and I'll see you soon, but hopefully not too soon," she said as we walked out of the room and to the main desk. "Do you have someone here to pick you up?"
"Yeah, that would be me. Sorry I'm late, I had some family problems to take care of at home," Shannon said as he hurried to us.
"Great!" She looked at Shannon and then back to me. "I'll see you later." She smiled once more before walking off down the hall.
"How's Gunnar holding up?" I asked as I filled out the paperwork to check out.
"Not too good. He's convinced that this is his fault."
"I'll talk to him." I said placing my hand on Shannon's shoulder. I could see how fatigued he was. There were large bags under his eyes and it looked like he didn't even have the time to comb his hair.
"Let's get out of here." I gave his shoulder a reassuring squeeze before walking toward the elevator.
