"Hey, kido. How are you?" Shannon asked sitting next to me at the breakfast bar. I didn't respond. "You know the food isn't going to magically put itself in your stomach if you just stare at it."
I glared at him from the corner of my eye and went back to staring at the stack of pancakes in front of me. I just wanted to be alone, but between Shannon and my mother, that was asking for a lot right now. After our house became a crime scene, we moved into Shannon's place, and they wouldn't let me out of their sight.
"If you're worried about Toni, he's fine. He gets out of the hospital today. As a matter of fact I go pick him up in thirty minutes. Gunnar none of this is your fault."
That's where he was wrong. All of it was my fault, but I don't even know why. Adam made me a target, and even at this moment anyone near me could get hurt.
"Good morning my handsome men," my mother said as she entered the kitchen. She kissed Shannon the lips and went to kiss my cheek, but I turned away.
"Gunnar-"
I stood and went to my room before she could say anything else. As I turned the corner of the hallway I bumped into Natasha. Since her brother was in the hospital she's been staying with us at his request.
"Sorry," I said walking around her my room. As I shut the door maybe I could finally be alone. I looked at my phone to check the time, but the picture of me and Feo at the park caught my attention. I began to reminisce about the time I spent with her.
We were sitting on a blanket just people watching. She was sitting between my legs and leaned back into me to catch the rays of sunlight on her face when I took the picture. She heard the snap of the camera and tried to take the phone from me, but I played keep away. In short that led to a fifteen minute make out session. My home screen was taken earlier that morning. I had left to get breakfast and clothes that Feo could where out. When I returned she was dripping wet and wrapped in a towel. She was distracted looking out the window, and I couldn't pass up that picture perfect moment.
I walked up behind her placing kisses on her shoulder. She turned and let the towel fall to the ground as her arms encircled my neck.
As I thought about the events that took place after that, I felt empty. I knew it was safer for her not to be with me right now, but I couldn't deny my love for her. I sent her a text telling her that I missed her, but left it at that.
There was a knock on the door, and Antonio entered. "Look I'm not here to tell you that everything is fine. Someone tried to kill us, and there's no mistake about that, but I'm alive, you're alive. We should be thankful for that." Antonio shut my door sitting on the edge of my bed. He was silent for a moment.
"You're going to look back on this one day, and you're going to see that some good came out of this."
"How can any good come out of this? He's trying to kill me, and who's to say he won't try to finish you off?"
"You know who was driving the car?"
"I have my suspicions," I mumbled.
"Why haven't you told anyone?"
"Because the last thing I want is for any of you to get involved more than you already are just by being near me."
There was another tap on the door. "The police are here to ask you questions," Shannon called from the other side.
I stood making my way to the living area. My mother was standing on the far side of the room, and looked like a nervous wreck.
"Gunnar?" One of them asked as they saw me. I nodded. "I'm Detective Gates and this is my partner Detective Harris. We'd like to ask you a few questions about Sunday night if that's okay?"
"On one condition. I don't want my parents in the room."
"What?" My mother protested. "Why?"
"I'm not saying anything until you leave. Go outside on back deck."
My mom opened her mouth to respond, but Shannon guided her away to the patio. Once they were outside I followed behind them and locked the sliding door. My mother looked furious, but I didn't care.
I guided the men down to the den and shut that door behind me.
"Why so secretive?" Detective Harris asked.
"Because what I say to you could be a danger to everyone here. I need your full disclosure that you won't speak a word of this to anyone in this household."
They both nodded, and one pulled out a recorder and started it.
"Do you have any enemies, Gunnar?" Detective Gates asked.
"One. His name is Adam Donovan."
"Adam Donavan? The principal's son?"
I nodded, but then I remembered they were recording. "Yes."
"And why is he your enemy?"
"Guess it's because of a girl. The first day I moved here I met a girl across the street-"
"And what's her name?"
"Moxxi Carter. I met Moxxi and I liked her, but when I went to school that next day, Adam claimed her as his, and he didn't like me around her. So Adam and I got into a fight. He's hated me ever since."
"Do you think he hates you enough to attempt to kill you?"
"I don't think he does. I know he does. He's already tried once."
"He has?"
"Yeah, a little over a month ago he and some other teammates on the rugby team tried to kill me and make it seem like some freak accident. It put me in a coma for three weeks."
"How do you know this wasn't an accident?"
"When the coach says two hand touch, you don't generally dislocate someone's shoulder, break three of their ribs, give them a hairline fracture to the sternum. Not even in a real game would someone do that."
"Do you think Adam and the drive by shooter are connected?"
"I know they are. If it wasn't him pulling the trigger, then it was definitely a hired gun."
"These are some very wild accusations your making Mr. Rhodes, but we did do some digging, and we have confirmation from his mother and friends that Adam is in London right now. We've checked his funds, the families nothing is out of place or unusual."
That can't be true. Feo heard Adam say himself that he wanted me dead, but I couldn't bring her name into this. "Are you sure?"
"We're positive Mr. Rhodes. That's all of our questions for today." They stopped the recorder, and took their leave.
Something much bigger was going on here and I had no idea what.
