Jonathan began to realize that he and Selina were not headed to Wayne Manor at all. They had been walking for thirty minutes in the opposite direction, headed deeper into the darkest parts of Gotham City. He was beginning to get a sick feeling in his stomach, Selina looked some what upset...then again it was hard to tell. Selina's face was expressionless but he could tell something was wrong in the way she was avoiding eye contact, her eyes were kept low, her shoulders tense with her arms crossed.
"Selina, where are we going?" he finally asked.
She didn't flinch or slow her pace to say, "I met this girl a little while back. I stopped a big ugly perv from laying a hand on her...She is young. I wanna pay a quick visit."
"Oh," Jonathan wasn't expecting this answer but was very happy their little journey had nothing to do with Bruce Wayne, "alright. How much farther?" Jonathan quickly glanced around at the man they just past.
"Actually, we are here, down this street." Jonathan followed Selina down a street where the sunlight didn't shine on due to the towering buildings surrounding it. The dark street was long and had project apartment buildings on either side. Jonathan was expecting for Selina to lead him to one of the many side doors that lead to the apartment halls but he should have known this wouldn't happen. Selina was never predictable. Instead he followed her to a large trash can in the middle of the street. Selina slammed the lid of it down and lifted herself on top of it. She stretched her arms up while on tippy-toes to pull down a neighboring fire escape latter.
"Selina that leads to their balcony, we're gonna get caught." Jonathan was backing up as if someone was watching them and he didn't want to seem like they were together.
"Do we ever get caught?" Selina raised her hands then slapped her thighs, shaking her head in disbelief.
Jonathan considered her question, "We haven't yet."
"Exactly. Now C'mon!" She pulled the ladder down and began to climb.
"Wait up!" Jonathan used all his strength to pull himself up onto the trash can without looking like he did and began to follow Selina up the ladder. From the balcony you could see every window of every apartment across. All the blinds were shut in ever small window except one that they were directly across from.
"I thought we were visiting your little friend."
"We are." Selina said as she studied the window, "From a distance."
"Why not just-"
"Look there she is." Selina pointed across at the small window. Inside a little girl with long hair was holding a stuffed tiger, smiling as she sat down at what appeared to be a kitchen table. Jonathan saw a tall man come in a little after her, choosing the seat directly beside her. He began to read through a newspaper while the little girl made her tiger walk back and forth across the table top. Selina sighed as the man put down his newspaper and scooped the little girl into his lap. She wished that all the little girls in Gotham were like Sarah, with a good family, a roof over their heads and a stuffed a tiger.
"Aww.." Jonathan couldn't help but smile. The kid was adorable, with pudgy cheeks and small hands. She was lost in her own world with her tiger. Jonathan snapped out of the seen and looked to Selina who was lost in her own fascination. He hadn't seen her like this before, she looked far away from him, lost. "Selina?"
"I just wanted to know she would stay okay." Selina turned to Jonathan after she spoke, a surprised look on his face, "Yeah I'm weird, what else is new?"
"That's not weird. It's nice. You still think about her." Jonathan nudged her in the shoulder like she always did to him.
"Yeah, I want better for her."
"What's her name?"
"Sarah. Sarah Carastep." They stared at the father and daughter a little longer. "Alright, to downtown!"
