Selina Kyle | The Beginning

        School...Seems like a nice place to be at the moment. Selina watched the old, but still standing, brick building from a tree on a hill that looked down on the school, wondering what it would be like when the kids started to pour out of the school in five minutes. She thought about what it would be like to be a student here at Gotham High School. She wondered what the classrooms looked like and what the teachers were like, but most of all she thought about Jonathan. She wondered what his day was like, what it was like to be a “freshman” in high school who preferred reading over talking to other people. She wished time would speed up so she could see all the students come out and so she could see Jonathan and then he could tell her what his day was like. Jonathan... Somehow he was different from anyone she'd ever met before. Selina felt like she already knew Jonathan so well even their first real conversation was just yesterday, yet here she was waiting for him to get out of school. She knew their growing friendship was unlikely, I mean she is homeless and uneducated, and he is not homeless and highly educated, yet she so desperately wanted to give this, whatever it was, a try.

        Selina was suddenly taken out of her thoughts when a loud but distant ringing could be heard coming from the building. That must be the bell. This is it. The kids started to quickly file out of the building. All had their own group of friends either huddled together or walking side by side. Selina didn't see Jonathan anywhere. She hopped down from the tree she was in and swiftly landed on the grassy hill. She received some glares from the students now starting to walk up the hill but she ignored them. She studied the faces in the crowds but couldn't seem to find Jonathan anywhere until she spotted a small figure growing in the distance behind piles of students. Jonathan was walking alone, with his hands stuffed into his pockets. He was searching the crowd for Selina and she decided to let him do so instead of pointing herself out to him. She calmly waited for him to spot her on the hill, standing confidently with her head up and a small smile. He finally did spot her waiting for him a smile spread across his face. She noticed his face turn red even from this distance and giggled to herself. He jogged the last ten feet to her and smiled wide.

        “I didn't think you would come!” He admitted and then quickly wished he hadn't.

        “One thing you should know about me kid, I don't go back on my word.” He smiled to himself and stole a few glances at her face when she wasn't looking. They walked side by side up the steep hill. For once Jonathan felt like he fit in with everyone else. All the other students had someone to walk with, and he now had Selina.

        “Whats school like?” She asked with an almost desperate tone but covered up her true longing with a serious face.

        “Well, it's kinda boring. But some of the teachers are nice...Oh, and the classes can be interesting.” He could tell she wanted to know more school life but he didn't say more because he didn't want to ruin whatever impression she had of it.

        “What do you do? All those kids seemed really happy, is it fun?” She couldn't help but ask questions, it all seemed so interesting.

        “Well, not for me. For you it probably would be, but I'm not really good with other people...” He felt stupid for saying this and wondered why everything he said always came out wrong when he was with her and then shook the thought from his mind.

        Selina couldn't help but feel awful, Jonathan was such a nice boy, was everyone so cruel to him? The thought pissed her off. She felt for Jonathan's sake she should stop talking about school, “Do you ever wonder what the future is gonna be like?”

        Jonathan was a bit taken a back by her question but knew that questions like this often came up at random times and he too would ask someone that. “Yeah, all the time.”
