Prologue:
I walk down the hallway, searching for food. My tummy grumbled and I walked faster; hoping there was leftover snacks from yesterday's party. When I reached the door, I heard voices. I put my ear near the door, and listened. I heard the maid, Mrs. Stuart, voice, " I'm sorry sweetie, but you can't play outside. I have to do my job and you're not supposed to play in other people's backyard."
Who could that be?? I tried to listen harder, but there was no more voices. I turned the knob on the door and stepped into the warm, cozy kitchen. The maid stopped talking and looked at me. She stepped closer to the boy, who was standing next to her. The boy looked about my age, with blondish hair and green eyes. " Hello Mrs.Stuart, I said politely. I looked at the boy and wondered who he was. A relative of the maid. Maybe her nephew. Mrs. Stuart wasn't that old, maybe in her early 30's.
Mrs. Stuart smiled grimly. I smiled and asked, " may I have some snacks please. I'm gonna go to the backyard and play." The boy flinched and stared at the ground. I guess Mrs.Stuart saw me looking at the boy and she gestured to the mysterious boy. "Lily this is my son Jake. Jake this is Lily." I smiled at this Jake and he replied with a scowl. " well if you want to behave like that, then fine , I thought to myself.
I glared at this Jake with all my might and he stared back. We stared at each other like that for a few minutes before we were interrupted by Mrs.Stuart. She cleared her throat and smiled at me. I smiled back, never keeping my eyes off the boy. Mrs. Stuart looks at the boy and as if the boy knew what she was thinking, the boy bolted out of the room and my eyes followed him. He ran to the pantry and I looked at his mother. I then realized something. This Jake wanted to play outside. And his mother wouldn't let him. " of course " I scoffed. " nobody wants to play in a rich girl's house or would want to play with a rich girl"
Jake returned with a bundle of snacks and I smiled greedily. I cleared my throat when he handed me the snacks and I spoke before my mind could react. I blurted out," do u wanna play with me outside??" He smiles shyly and looks at his mom. Mrs.Stuart looks wary and I instantly knew why. My parents were over protective of me, especially when it came to people with poor backgrounds. I hated my parents for this. They didn't understand that it didn't matter if you were poor or rich.
" Don't worry," I say. "My parents wouldn't be home until very late"  I cross my fingers and pray that Mrs. Stuart would agree. After she considers my words, she nods slowly. " but only for a few hours," she warns. The mysterious boy scrambles to the door and I follow. I smile at my luck and run toward the yard with Jake following me.
