Lily's POV:
When I had just finished with the customer who was looking for one of our most recent books, I sat on one of the stools and reached out for a book. Just as I was reading about the main character in the process of fleeing for danger, my cell phone rang. The usual ringtone filled the air and I checked the caller id, wondering who would call me during this time. It was lunchtime and the store was deserted. My eyes almost fall out of my sockets as I read the caller i.d:
Mom
Why was she calling at this time? Feeling panicked, I walk out the door and answer her call without further thinking.
"Took you a while to answer. Didn't I tell you to answer the call within 5 seconds or I'll beat you senseless when you get home"
Crap. Here comes more drama.
"Yes mother. It won't happen next time." I say with a fake good girl attitude.
"Cut the fake attitude slut. Where the hell are you. Your father's having a luncheon with the major companies he's working with right now. The whole family is supposed to be here. Get your ass over here or your going to be seeing hell soon."
Luncheon? What luncheon?
"Ok mother I'm coming there right now."
I hear a grunt and she hangs up. Oh god. How was I going to explain this to the boss. It has only been a week since I started working and it would look bad if I requested the rest of the day off. And I couldn't skip this luncheon. I would be dead by tonight if I didn't. Ughh. I decide to head inside to try and ask the boss if I could have an extended lunch break. Heading back in, I collide with something or someone.
"Do you always bump into me on purpose?"
Oh god. Out of all people it has to be him.
"Sorry Jake.it was an accident."
"Accident huh. Doesn't look like that to me. Seems to me like you're as clumsy as ever."
I glare at him and step back.
"Not in the mood Jake. Please move. I need to speak with the boss first."
I move to the right and he moves in the same direction blocking me. I move left and he does the same movement.
"Get your fucking ass out of the way Jake. I'm fucking serious right now"
"Damn girl. Chill out. I didn't even get to yell at you for leaving the cash register empty earlier. Where the hell were you. You know someone could've broken in and robbed us.... And-"
Feeling like I was about to explode, I quickly duck under his arms, leaving him behind to talk to the air. I race upstairs to the boss's office. Just as I was about to reach the door to the office, I feel a pair of hands grab my waist and turning me away from my destination.
"GET OFF ME!!" I scream.
Suddenly the person releases me and I stumble back with a sigh.
"Calm down. Lily. I was just playing."
I look up at Jake with a look of disgust. His expression was one of guilt and surprise.
"It's not funny to me. I have a damn problem right now and I don't need an asshole like you to mess up everything. I have to go to a luncheon like ASAP and my lunch break is only for 45 minutes. Now if you please excuse me, I have to go talk to the boss."
He nods his head at my straightforwardness and I turn around and head right into the office.
1 minute later....
"You don't understand m'am. I mean Jenna. I have something really important that came up just right now. I can't miss."
"I'm sorry Lily. But you only have 45 minutes. No excuses. If I start giving you more time. Then I'll have to give others more time too. It's just not possible. "
Why was this happening to me? Out of all people. I can't believe this. And I thought everything was going well too.
"Please Jenna. I need like 2 hours. That's it. I'll come and do overtime if I have too."
She shakes her head with a sad look on her face.
"If I give her my lunch break. Will that be ok Jenna?" Speaks a familiar voice.
I whirl around to see Jake with a shy grin on his face.
"Um well. I think that will be fine. Are you ok with that Lily?"
"Huh. Oh well. Um......."
I sneak a glance at him and he winks.
"Yeah. It's ok. I'll be back in 2 hours then. Thanks Jenna."
I give Jenna a wave and rush out the door. Well after I gave Jake a hug. We almost crash to the wall and I whisper my thanks to him. More than grateful that I had met him.
