~*Preston*~

I lean against the brick wall surrounding the outdoors area and sigh, staring up at the clear blue sky overhead. Only a single white cloud lazily floated overhead, like a cotton ball in the middle of a vast ocean of blue. "Preston!" I blink and look over to who called my name. Mat was smiling and waving me over to him and this guy with obnoxiously bright pink hair.

"What's going on?" I ask, standing up and walking over to them.

"Steve, meet Preston. Preston, this is the new guy, Steve," Mat says excitedly.  I hold out my hand and "Steve" looks at me like I grew a second head.

"Wait, you're Preston?" His voice was obnoxiously high pitched, and almost as annoying as his brightly coloured hair.

"Yes I am Preston. Why do you-" Steve grabs my face and pulls it close to his.

"You smell like books," He hisses before letting me go. "Steve doesn't like books."

"Preston doesn't have any books, Steve," Mat reassures him.

"Good. Can we go play now?" Steve forgets all about me and looks at Mat.

"Can we put unicorns in this time?" Mat asks, turning his attention back to Steve.

"Yeah!"

"Sweet!" The two run off and I run a hand through my hair. I hate this place...

The bell rings and I run towards the door. When the bell rings, it's time to go back in. I prefer to be one of the first in, or I'll be stuck in the crowd of brain-dead-psychos who laugh too much.

The door opens and the guard flashes a smile at me, "Hello, Preston. As anxious as ever to get inside, I see." He lets out a small laugh.

"You of all people should know why," I state, jumping up and down impatiently.

"Sometimes I wonder how you got in here. You act like a normal person."

"But I'm not," I state with a shrug. The guard sighs before moving out of the way. Freedom!
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
I open my door and walk into my room, closing the door quickly. Taking a deep breath, I flop down onto my bed and sigh. I need a nap. Looking around the usual bland interior, my eyes catch onto a paper on the nightstand; making my heart skip a beat. Don't tell me Lisa saw the letter! Sitting up with a start, I look at the paper with urgency. It wasn't in my handwriting, and it wasn't addressed to "Nobody" as I originally do. It was addressed to me.

Dear Preston,

I don't know why I am responding to your letter. I just felt like you needed some sort of response. You sound like a cool guy. Though, I would advise you be more cautious when talking about your caretaker that way. You were lucky I was the one who found it. If you'd like, here's a summary of me.
I'm 23, 6'1", and I live alone in a small apartment a few miles west of this place. I'm willing to read your letters, and respond to them.
I hope to write you again soon!

Sincerely,
Nobody

I stare at the letter. Confusion, humor, fear, and so many other emotions rush through my mind at the same time. Someone outside of this death trap actually wants to talk to me?

I jump at the sound of knocking at my door, "Preston?" I crumple up the paper and toss it into the bin just as Lisa opens the door.

"What?" I ask, rubbing the back of my neck as she looks inside the room.

"I just wanted you to meet the new volunteer Rob. He'll be working with you and Mat," Lisa says stepping out of the way for the man I saw in the lobby earlier.

"It's nice to meet you, Preston!" Rob smiles and waves at me. His cheeks had a pink tint to them. He must have just met Mat.

"That's a first," I mutter under my breath.

"What was that?" Lisa asks, raising her eyebrow.

"It's nice to meet you too," I say sarcastically, narrowing my eyes at Lisa.

The room goes quiet for a few minutes until Rob speaks up, "You're very," he pauses to think for a moment. "Calm compared to Mat."

"I get that a lot." I shrug. "Mat's more hyper than a five-year-old who was just given a handful of candy."

"You could say that again," Rob states, the smile still prominent on his face. I laugh slightly and run a hand through my hair.

"See? The two of you are getting along! This is amazing!" Lisa exclaims, making me roll my eyes.

"Whatever," I mutter, turning around to look at the wall, re-memorizing all of the small grooves and indents on it.

"Well it was nice meeting you, Preston, but I need to get going. I'll see you tomorrow!" Rob's voice was happy.

"Yeah. See you," I mumble, waving my hand in his general direction.

~*Rob*~

My smile falters slightly as I walk out of the room. He didn't seem like the guy who wrote the letter at all. I guess he's upset from being cooped up in that room for who knows how long. I know I would be. "Rob, wait up!" I look over to see Lisa running over, her hair slightly messed up.

"What's wrong?" I ask, crossing my arms as she catches her breath.

"I'm sorry about Preston. He's not one for meeting new people, but once he's used to you he might open up a little."

"It's fine." I smile reassuringly. "I understand where he's coming from."

"To be honest, he hasn't opened up to me yet, but he is willing to tell everything about himself to Mat. I don't know why, but I guess it's because he's being stubborn."

"He might not be very fond of most people. I get that."

"I'm glad you understand. Now I have to get back to work. I'll see you tomorrow!"

"Yeah." I smile and wave before using the key card Megan gave me to enter the lobby.

"Have a wonderful night, Mr. Latsky!" Megan calls as I walk toward her desk.

"Thank you, but what do I do with the-"

"Keep it. We have plenty to spare," she smiles and waves me away. I nod and push the card into the pocket of my hoody before walking out into the parking lot. As I climb into my car, Lisa's words echo in my mind. He's being stubborn...

I know I am going to help him. With letters, and in person.
