I was folding clothes when the moment that changed my life happened. I was in my father's store, doing my work as usual. Nothing was out of the ordinary, or so I thought.
There I was minding my own buisness when all of a sudden SLAM! someone knocked me to the ground. I had been working for three hours already and my anger was boiling. I got up and started yelling.
"Watch where you're going asshole!" I yelled.
"Wow would you talk like that to the-"
"Prince." I was staring at the prince of Burgess. My jaw dropped and I couldn't stop staring. There he was smirking at me.
"I think this is the part where you bow and apologize. " He chuckled. I did as instructed and stood back up.
"I have to get back to work." I said as realization hit. I went back to folding clothes.
"Why? No one can get mad at you for talking to the Prince." He smirked. I shook my head and let out a bitter laugh as I placed a shirt on the shelf.
"Yeah but the thing is no one would believe me. And I assume casual visits to the village are frowned upon at the castle." His smile fell. "So you did sneak out."
"Maybe? " I rolled my eyes. "I have a question. "
"Shoot." I said not looking up.
"Did you sign up for the selection?" I laughed.
"Nope." I said popping the p. He frowned.
"Why not?" He asked me.
"Because I have no interest in any of it. It's a foolish game to win a higher station and a husband." I snapped.
"Its a chance to find love."
"Ha love is pathetic. " I said bitterly.
"Plus, would a higher station be that bad? I mean being a five can't be that easy."
"I was a born a five. I was meant to stay a five."
"I don't believe that." He seemed genuine but he was probably just a good actor.
"Will you sign up for the selection?" He asked."No."
"Why not? You have nothing to lose!" He stated, earning a glare from me.
"I have my entire life to lose!"
"Please sign up for the selection." He pleaded.
"We just met. Why do you even want me to enter?"
"I'm going to be stuck with so many fakes who just want to marry a prince instead of wanting to marry me. You seem like the kinda girl who could balance it out. You could make the selection bearable for me." I shook my head.
"You would get sick of me after a day."
"Please enter." He stepped forward, closer to me.
"No. " I replied backing up.
"Please." He took another step forward.
"No." I took another step back. I felt my back hit the wall and knew I couldn't go anywhere.
"Please." His voice grew more demanding as he stepped forward again. He was inches away from me.
"I'll think about it." I said trying to get away.
"They're picking the names tomorrow. You don't have time to think."
"Fine." I sighed giving up.
"Tell me your name." He said. I thought of the first name I could.
"Pocahontas. " I blurted out.
"Tell me your real name." He said unimpressed with my lie.
"Please go. I have to finish my work before my boss comes back." Instead of walking away I felt a pair of lips press onto mine.
"Just tell me your name and I'll stop." He said before leaning in again. He kissed me again before pulling away smirking.
"Elsa." I said. He finally backed up.
"I'll see you in a week, Elsa." He left the store as my boss walked in. He was not happy.
"What the hell is this?" He yelled. "Why aren't you done yet?"
"A-a costumer came in and held me-" a hand came across my face. "Up." I finished holding my face. Tears threatened my eyes.
"Get back to work."
"Yes sir. I'll be done by the time you return." I said. My father glared and nodded before exiting the store.
That night I sat in front of the mirror. I thought about the prince. I touched my lips where he kissed me. Then I thought of my father. I touched my face where he slapped me. The prince was right. I had nothing to lose.
I grabbed the application and filled it out. Then I placed it in the mail. My fate being sent into the hands of others.
