On Saturday night, Maya was at the Matthews, on the couch with Riley as she wrote with her notebook close to her. The phone started to ring and Cory answered it from the table.
"Hello?"
Maya looked back down at her paper and went back to organizing her hours and money made in small letters so that no one could see. A minute later, Cory put the phone down.
"What was that?" Asked Riley.
"Maya's mom wanted to know if she was here."
"Oh, okay."
"But..." Maya bit her lip. "She said that you're not home very often." She looked back down. "And you're not saying why." Maya continued to write. "Maya. I'm going to ask you again, what is going on?" Maya stood up.
"I don't know why it matters. Everyone is happy." He grabbed her backpack.
"Why do you always have this?" She grabbed it out of his hand and grabbed her coat.
"Leave it alone." She left the room and he sat down where she was.
"Daddy." Riley was near tears. He reached over and hugged her. "It's gonna be okay, Riley. Please don't worry." He didn't like to see his daughter so worried. She fell asleep in his arms as Maya searched for a place to sleep, without them knowing what she was doing.
