My name is Ruby Millers. That's right, I was named after the beautiful red gemstone.
Did you know that 12 different gemstones each represents a month? Rubies represent the month of July.
Now enough about my name. I'm a sixteen year old student at high school and I live in the city of New York. The Big Apple. The city that never sleeps. That is, in Brooklyn.
It's a busy place just like my dad. I live in a house along with my parents and I was an only child.
My dad's a doctor. I don't see him much because he's always busy at work, only in the mornings. Unlike my dad, my mom's always home.
Today's the first day of school. Ugh school. What a nightmare.
It was 7:00 am and of course my alarm went off. But I was still sleeping. Yes, I'm one of those people who sleeps a lot and never wakes up. My mom knocked on my bedroom door.
"RUBY!!! GET YOUR ASS OFF THE BED!!! YOU'VE GOT SCHOOL YOUNG LADY!!" She yelled.
"Can't I sleep a little longer mom?" I whined covering my head with the soft unicorn blanket.
"YOU'LL BE LATE FOR SCHOOL, NOW HURRY UP AND GET READY!"
So I got up, rubbed my eyes, and headed to the bathroom. I brushed my teeth and took a shower. I have long straight brunette hair and I pulled it back into a ponytail. I took out and wore my grey knitted sweater and my blue jeans. I also wore a pair of sneakers. I took my bags swinging them onto my shoulders, books and headed downstairs.
My mom was waiting for me in the dining room. She made me bacon and eggs for breakfast, I love you mom...
"Here's breakfast, honey." She handed me a plate. "Thanks mom." I answered taking the plate from her.
I finished my breakfast, it was 7:45. School starts at 8:30. My mom drives me to school everyday, I wish I can drive my own but life's hard.
My dad had to leave early for work. My mom grabbed the car keys and we drove to school.
"So, are you excited for the first day of school?" asked mom smiling but eyes focused on the road. "Definitely not! I wish the school break was longer." I protested.
"Oh come on, Ruby! You can see your wonderful friends and teachers again at school."
I moaned, how does she not understand the dreadful pain students suffer at school?
We arrived at school. I waved goodbye to my mom and head to the front door. I meet up with one of my best friends, Jackson.
"Ruby, hey! I've missed you!" Jackson cried putting his arms out ready for an embrace.
"Hey Jackson, I've missed you too." I hugged him tightly.
Jackson is a really nice guy. He has been my best friend since 7th grade. Jackson is kind of like me. People call him a nerd. Yes, he reads books a lot, watch lots of movies and plays video games. But our difference is, he's really smart while I'm just a dumb sack of potatoes.
Jackson has an average height. He wears glasses and has short black hair brushed neatly to the left
"Where's Madelyn?" I asked Jackson.
"Brandon's supposed to drive her to school."
Madelyn is also my best friend. She's a preppy girl and wears colorful girly clothes all the time. She's got long beautifully curled blonde hair. She's really sweet and caring. She's been dating this jock named Brandon lately. Unlike Madelyn, I've never dated anyone.
"RUBY!!!! JACKSON!!!! HI GUYS!!!" Madelyn ran towards us and hugged, really tight.
"Oh my gosh, Maddie! It's really nice to see you again." I smiled at Maddie (that's what everyone calls her)
"Where's Brandon?" Asked Jackson.
"Oh him, he had to ditch school today. He's going somewhere. He didn't tell me where." Maddie replied frowning.
We head to our lockers together. I went to mines and shoved in my bag and took out my history books. I head to history class. I was in the same class as Maddie.
Maddie was sitting beside me. The bell rang and everyone were seated. Mrs. Grant, our History teacher walked in with a...guy I've never seen before. Must be a new student.
"Class, I want you to meet our newest student, Lucas Vrixon. Lucas, please take a seat over there, next to Ruby." She pointed at the empty seat on my left.
The new guy sat down next to me. He was wearing a black hoodie. It was like he was trying to hide his face.
I stared at him and saw his eyes turn red and they sparkled. My jaws literally dropped from the shock.
I whispered to Maddie, "I swear I just saw the new kid's eyes turn red and they sparkled!"
"What are you talking about Ruby, his eyes are green. Are you into him or something?" Maddie chuckled. "What the hell of course not! Shut up Maddie!" I snapped.
Maddie teased, "OH MY GOD, you so are!!!" I rolled my eyes.
I tried to forget about Lucas' eyes and paid attention to Mrs. Grant. Who knows, I may be hallucinating because of the stress of school.
"Now, I will pair you up and you will research about one of these historican people and write a paper about him/her. Ruby, your partner will be Lucas. Please go easy on him, he's new." The whole class laughed.
Lucas flashed a smile. I thought it was kind of cute. Not kinda cute...really cute.
I dragged my chair to the new guy's desk. I introduced myself, "Hey, I'm Ruby. And don't worry, I'll take it easy on you." Lucas made a little laugh.
"Nice to meet you, Ruby," replied Lucas. He opened his hood and I could see his GORGEOUS spiky, light ash brown hair. It was a FLAWLESS QUIFF. I can go on and on about his hair forever. Ugh, I need to stop. Lucas had a really tall body as well. I'd say, he's 6 feet tall :3
I smiled shyly. He smiled too. "So where do you want to do this project?" He asked. "We can do it at my house, if you want." I replied. "Great, we could do it tomorrow, after school." "Sure!"
After hours of boring studying, it was finally lunch time. YAY!
I headed to the table Jackson and Maddie were sitting at bringing my lunch tray. I sat down and chat.
"Jackson, have you heard about the new kid, Lucas Vrixon?" Asked Maddie.
"Nope, I haven't. Lucas 'Vrixon'? That sounds like a character from a fantasy movie or something." Jackson chuckled. "Well, Ruby is into that 'fantasy character' aren't you Ruby," asked Maddie. "OMG Maddie would you stop, he is kinda cute but he's not my type." I lied. "I um need to return my um these books to the library." said Jackson. He left. "That was weird. Oh well, I'm going to stay and enjoy this delicious plate of mac and cheese." Maddie took a spoonful of macaroni and stuffed them in her mouth.
*****
School finally ended and I couldn't stop thinking of Lucas on the way home. I admit. I actually liked the guy. He's the first!
