I attempted to give my excuses so I could head home but the boys dragged me to the house ignoring my objections. Nate actually started humming loudly to block out my voice as he was pulling me along, his arm looped through mine, rushing to the back door. He went straight through, completely comfortable doing so and showing how often he must come over."Honey, we're home!" Nate yells out into the kitchen.
There was a short silence followed by the sound of running feet come from upstairs and then seem to stampede down the stairs. I pulled back not sure what I was about to be facing, something big by the sounds of things. Nate kept a hold of my pulling me in front of him and holding onto my hips to keep me in place. I'm still struggling to escape his hold when I notice the stomping has stopped, feeling eyes on me I turn to see what had come down to greet us.
In front of me stood two of the most beautiful tiny beings I had ever seen. A boy and a girl, Identical golden locks and big blue eyes shining in wonder and innocence. They must have been about 4 years old and they were staring at me, eyes wide. The girl had a crown and a bright pink tutu on, the boy a superman t-shirt and a make shift cape draped around his shoulders, and both carried cardboard swords. They had obviously been playing dress up and had been having some kind of epic battle, based on their rosy cheeks and the boys half torn weapon. The girl had a little pout on her lips and the boys were open in a shocked oval.
Hadn't the boys brought over a girl before?
The boy took the girls hand in his and tugged on it telling her something in the secret language all twins share. It squeezed something tightly in my chest.
Kate.
My breath hitched and I felt my eyes fill with unshed tears, throat feeling clogged with emotions. Trying to calm myself down I took a deep shuddering breath and let in out, quivering and slow. I blinked away the tears then shut my eyes tight before opening them wide, composing myself.
Seeing the twin's nervous faces I gave them a watery smile and stepped towards them, crouching to their level.
"Hi. My names May. What are your names?" I ask them, trying to protrude an unthreatening vibe, smiling the best smile I can muster.
The boys lips pop shut and then he sucks in his lower lip, glancing at his sister for direction.
"My name is Lucy." The girl says proudly evidently the braver of the two, though she has a cute lisp so it comes out more like Luthcy. Se grins at me and I can see the gaps in her front teeth, my own lips stretch wider automatically.
The boy gaining confidence from his sister whispers. "I'm Luke." Pulling o his super man top.
"It's very nice to meet you both. Your costumes are really cool." They both stand a taller at my compliment with broad grins.
I see movement to my left, its Jace bending down next to me. He plays with the tutu and nods giving his approval of Lucy and Luke's outfits. He puts both his fists out to them and they fist bump his with their tiny closed hands. I have to admit, it's pretty adorable.
"May is the girl that moved in next door." He tells them, wrapping an arm around me. "We have to be extra nice to her so she lets us play catch over the fence to her garden." He says the second part in a secretive hushed tone, hands blocking his mouth, as if I cant hear.
Their faces nod enthusiastically and they both turn to me hopeful expressions leaking out.
I turn back to see that the others are stood side by side muttering to each other under their breaths and I raise my eyebrows at them. The boys are watching me with odd looks, as if I'm something special, and it makes me turn away from them. They don't really know me. I'm anything but special.
I think back to Jace and Nate's reactions to me cuddled up with Deacon. I thought they would get mad or make some joke, but instead they just grinned at me. It was creepy to be honest. I have no idea what these boys are thinking.
"Dinner time guys!" A melodic voice calls out from somewhere deeper into the house. I whip away from Deacon and Nate, using the distraction to escape their gazes.
The twins each grab one of my hands and pull me with them to a bathroom down the hall. Jace's house and mine look similar from the outside but its very different inside.
"Muma sways we shwould always wass our hawnds before Dinner." Lucy tells me sagely, Luke nodding along.
Luke pushes a little step, tucked into the corner of the bathroom, to the sink. They both climb up onto it and commence to scrub their hands. Lucy presses on the leaver to the soap filling her hands and then wipes some of it onto my own. I close my lips tightly to stop my smile.
All the while thinking of similar tasks Kate and I would do in a similar fashion.
This hurts.
I think I should leave, but when I look at their cherub faces, I can't bring myself to do it.
