THE FIRE SIGNS: Aries, Leo and Sagittarius

If you enjoy a rip roaring belly laugh, you won't be disappointed with a Fire sign. Passionate and exuberant, there's a child-like quality about these signs that gives them a preference for slapstick and pranks, with Sagittarius coming out on top as the Zodiac's most talented clown.

Since you don't have to think too hard about it, this is the kind of uncomplicated, in-your-face humor that most people can readily respond to. However, more sophisticated or serious types can sometimes be offended by the Fire signs' boisterousness and immaturity. Personally, if a joke isn't obvious they don't always get it and dry or dark humor often goes over their head.

THE EARTH SIGNS: Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn

As one might expect, these three star signs share an essentially 'earthy' sense of humor which has its roots in the physical world. Even the best educated among them enjoy bawdy jokes about sex and other bodily functions that more uptight people might find vulgar and tasteless.

Also known for their dry wit and sarcasm, Virgo and Capricorn have a unique kind of 'gallows' humor which enables them to convey the irony in even the gloomiest real-life situations. Uncomfortable with abstract jokes or overly boisterous antics, Earth signs are often unfairly judged as having no sense of humor by those who don't appreciate their deadpan style.

THE AIR SIGNS: Gemini, Libra and Aquarius

Witty in the true sense of being mentally quick and inventive, the Air signs are masters of amusing retorts and clever comebacks, with Gemini especially celebrated for its skillful word play. Theirs is a cerebral, yet light and frothy, humor centered on entertaining news and gossip, Aquarius being particularly drawn to the offbeat and the bizarre.

With their strong people skills, Air signs will rarely offend you by making a joke at your expense, but on the other hand will readily make fun of other people if it's likely to raise a laugh. Those slower on the uptake may see them as irritating smart-asses; in turn they easily become bored with people who can't keep up with their quick-fire wit.

THE WATER SIGNS: Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces

Imagination and empathy are the hallmarks of the typically 'Watery' sense of humor. These signs are good at laughing at life's disappointments, absurdities and improbabilities and will entertain you with hilariously funny, often highly embellished, stories about their personal disasters.

Water signs' humor is often self-deprecating, but – Scorpio excepted – they're usually too sensitive to other people's feelings to make a joke at someone else's expense. Notoriously cruel and biting, yet painfully funny, Scorpio wins the prize for the Zodiac's wickedest sense of humor.
