Kane studied Jamie a moment before shifting his gaze to Bellamy.
"How long are you gonna keep us locked up in here?" Bellamy asked the second their eyes met.
"Until I'm confident neither of you are a threat to others. Now, I have some questions for you." He paused to ensure he had both their attention. "Tell me about the grounders. What led to the attack at the dropship?"
Jamie tensed but immediately answered his question. "The grounders are vicious. They attacked us and we fought back."
"How many of them were there?"
"Hundreds." Her eyes narrowed marginally as he arched a brow and scoffed at her.
"Can you elaborate? Two hundred, three hundred?" Kane's expression already wavered in frustration and Jamie had to bite her lip to keep from grinning.
Bellamy shifted slightly beside her, fighting his own smirk. "We didn't count."
Kane narrowed his eyes as he replied. "Well why do you think they attacked? What provoked them?"
"We were here. That was enough." Jamie answered, as Kane began pacing in front of them.
Bellamy sighed and shook his head. "We're wasting time. The others didn't just vanish into thin air. They were taken and we need to go after them."
Kane stopped pacing to look at the two. "A search team is prepping to leave but not before we've gotten the intel we need from you."
Jamie's eyes widened and she took a step forward. "We need to be on that team." Her eyes pleaded with Kane's but he instantly shook his head.
"That's out of the question! Neither of you are trained. It's too dangerous."
"Those are our people out there!" Bellamy stepped forward beside Jamie with a scowl.
"They're my people too! You want to help them? Tell me what we're up against." Kane took a step towards them with his own expression rivaling their anger. "We need to know grounder tactics, their numbers, what kind of weapons they used."
"Arrows, spears, axes." Jamie started.
Bellamy glanced at her before he added on to her response. "Swords, their teeth."
Kane's brow furrowed before he met Bellamy's gaze. "No guns? You had guns."
Bellamy nodded as he grabbed Jamie's hand. "The guns we found at the aid depot leveled the playing field, and maybe, maybe if we'd had more bullets we could have..."
"There were more bullets. The search team just returned from the bunker. They found two more barrels full of rifles and a third filled with bullets." Kane interrupted, watching both of their expressions fall.
"We should have looked harder." Jamie whispered in horror at the realization.
Kane's expression softened as he watched the two strong leaders crumple and he took a step towards them. "You didn't know. You guys did the best you could."
Bellamy turned to Jamie and placed an arm around her shoulder. "We need to go with the search party. We have to help find them." Although his words were meant for Kane his eyes remained on Jamie, who had a death grip on his hand while her eyes focused on the floor in front of them.
Kane sighed and took another step closer to them. "I understand you both want to go and feel like you owe them this but it's not safe for you out there. We're just trying to protect you."
