Adam falls into step beside me without saying a word. For a few streets we walk in silence, and I pride myself in going the right way. But when he turns right and leaves me walking alone, I’m hopeless and have to follow.

“What are you doing?” I ask, toning down the anger in my voice, but just by a bit.

He refuses to look at me and there’s no hiding the fact that his jaw is clenched and he’s pissed. Oh, how pissed he must be because the girl he called a bitch is angry with him.

            “Walking you back.”

“I think I can manage without an intoxicant guiding me,” I say, however there’s no malice in my voice. If anything, I said it just to let him know I’m not happy. He reads between the lines and shrugs, continuing to show me the way without showing me at all.

When we arrive at Elizabeth Roe, Adam turns around and immediately walks the other way, his hands in his pockets. We don’t say goodbye, or thank you, or see you tomorrow. He simply leaves to head back to the bar and I let him go.
